Pale subs

I encoded Star Wars Ep I Phantom Menace with RB (my first RB encode). It worked well, other than the forced subs, which encoded very pale - barely readable. Any suggestions for creating more readable subs?

The subs aren't reencoded, they are left 100% intact from the original.

They look pale when playing on my computer (player superimposes them onto the picture), but not on my TV.

Oops - just checked the original DVD. Re-encode looks the same as the original.
