DVD Quality

I tried doing a search but, nothing really showed up. I want to encode a DVD using DivX and get the quality of the orignal DVD while reducing the file size by maybe 10 - 30%. Settings?

you just asked the mother of all questions and really there is no definite answer. if your using divx then I'll recommend the home theater profile. Additionally it's based on your filter choices in vdub/avisynth and what you choose to do and that is all source based. so perhaps you could give more information on what your trying to backup and we might be able to help you.

DVDs are MPEG-2; they are already compressed. Transcoding will of course, worsen the existing "quality" -- but human perception may or may not see the differences. An MPEG-4 transcoding at Quantizer 2 (100% quality) may or may not be noticeably "worse" quality than the DVD source. It will depend on many factors; your display device and lighting are just two that have nothing to do with a transcodig process but may have significant impact on your perceptions. And while a quality based encoding at Q2 may be the "best" output; there is no way to predict the output size. That will be content dependant.

In addition, DVDs do not have square pixels. During re-encoding to MPEG-4 codecs we usually resize them to square pixel format, either for playback on PC, or playback on standalones that accept PC formatted files. If you resize to square pixel resolution, your resizing methodology (Lanczos, Bicubic, etc.) will have significant impact on perceived quality, as will the chosen resolution, of course.

Basically same question as the person above. Ripped a DVD and trying to go for quality and a small file size.

I'm just trying to encoding a small 1 min 30 second clip out of some movie and I have to use a file size of about 60MB to even make it look decently good with my avs file I load into Gknot.

.... thats just dumb. It wasn't even a link. There are plenty of links to video clips of copywrite material on this forum,... why don't you go delete those...

I gave a name to a file as an example of what I'm aiming for. Thats not violating rule 6.

dude, for a first timer, try autogk (www.autogk.net), with the latest version of divx codec (fusion) and a 2-cd filesize, and if u wanna go with GordianKnot, use extreme quality for both passes, with h.263 optimized quantization! I would recommend ya to try autogk first, and keep the audio setting to around 160kbps mp3 audio, and other settings to default, and filesize as 2 -cd (actually, selecting 2-cd will split the resulting avi file, so select something like 1399 or 1401 mb)!
