Dual layer DVD

Hi guys, i'm new here, and have only recently started to back up my DVD's, having had my three year old sons greasy fingers destroy my beloved LOTR discs. I have bought a dual layer recorder, but i cant find a way of preserving films in their original bitrate for backup purpose ( ie maintaining a film of >4.7GB in its original state, to record onto a dual layer disc). Long films, such as Apocalypse Now Redux and LOTR are unwatchable due to the high compression onto a normal 4.7GB DVD. Can you help please?

Get DVD Decrypter (www.dvddecrypter.com), use Mode > ISO > Read to rip the original to an image, then use Mode > ISO > Write to burn that image to DVD+R DL. Also, set the Book type to DVD-ROM if you can.

Use DVD Shrink and the reauthor mode to split the move into 2 dvd-\+r or dvd+\-rw) disks at 100%. The current price of Dual Layer dvd's is way to high to consider them practical for backups.

I've been paying US $10 each for the Verbatim DL's. Now that I look back at it, total waste of money!
