In AutoGK, you can set a target quality level instead of a file size and get a single pass encode. I'd like to be able to do the same thing in standard GK with Xvid, but I'm not sure exactly how to do it.

I'm guessing that I need to set the first/second pass Xvid options for "Encoding Type" to "Single Pass"; and then adjust the "Target Quantizer/Bitrate" slider to the target bitrate that I'd like (i.e the average over many jobs).

Is the correct way to do it, or should I be trying for something else?

Afair single pass encoding was not finished yet (I was doing it but probably left half way through). I was gonna have a look at it in the following month probably...

that's how i would do it...don't know any other way in xvid :)

in the xvid codec, you can choose between target quantizer and bitrate, take your choice.

I do this method (one pass) in xvid and i get the best results (for me). The lower the quants (max) zones the better your quality. Set your quant zone ratios (i use 2-3) for your liking. Set your target bitrate (from gknot calculator). For me to get file size/bitrate control this way, you must use a good compression custom quant matrix and test which is the right resolution to use.

It can be done and imho, this is the best quality setting you can get while still having file size control at least for my eyes.

good luck
