I was looking at the manual's of these players on the Philips website.
They claim to support MPEG_4 Advanced Simple Profile (640-480). What I would like to know is what does the 640-480 bit mean? Can the resolution of the disc not go past 640? I have many backups that are well above that. Will it be able to play them back?
The link is here: Manual (http://www.p4c.philips.com/na4/d/dvp642_17/dvp642_17_dfu_eng.pdf)
The page is wquestion is Page 19

Edit: If I want to play back xvid backups on this thing, must I change the Fourcc to divx? If so, how?

RESOLUTION:
I do not know what the 640-480 bit means.

The resolution of the video on the disc CAN go past 640.

The maximum resolution is around 1100 by something - I forget exactly but I tried playing a HDTV rip and the player gave me an error like this: "Resolution not supported, max resolution is ????" I forget the exact max resolution but I remember that I was impressed with it, which tells me it was around 1024 or 1280.

So yes, the 642 will probably be able to play all your backups.

EDIT: Make sure you're not using QPEL in your backups, the 642 does not and probably never will support QPEL.

XVID:
As long as the XviD is in an AVI container you won't need to change anything. I have also read the 642 can play XviD's in MP4 containers.
