Seeking Faster NeroDigital AVC Settings

Hi all...

I've been playing with NeroDigital's AVC encoder, and have found that I am not getting the "FPS" encoding speeds that many of you seem to be pulling in. In fact, I'm getting 4-9 FPS on encodes. Makes for a looong encode.

I know that I am probably using very high quality (and thus, low speed) settings. I was hoping to get some input on where I can cut back. I am sure any quality differences I will see will not be worth the insane overnight encodes I'm getting.


First the CPU specs:
P4 3.06Mhz (533mhz fsb)
1.5 GB RAM
RAID-0 striping SATA array

Now the Recode settings:

Motion Vectors - -128/127

Ref Frames - 1
GOP - 300
B-Frames - 3

Encoding Tools - All Items Checked, "Automatic Smooth" Deblocking
Visual Enhancements - Chroma Optimization, High psychovisual

I've seen references to changing the deblocking, as well as sliding the decision quality down a notch or two.

Thoughts as to where I can get away with "less" on my settings?

And yes, I am acutely aware of how personalized encoding settings can be. What you like may not be what he likes, which may not be what I like etc. etc. Just looking for some ideas on which settings will give me the most bang for the buck when it comes to increasing speed.

Thanks for the pointer, Bond. I've read through many of the stickies prior to posting, as well as the NeroDigital guides which are here on Doom9 that explain which individual settings will impact speeds.

I was hoping to see some additional discussion which could possibly generate a "baseline" for average users. Some of the defaults in a NeroDigital AVC encode may be set a little high (or low), and if we as a community could see where we all had things set, IQ subjectivity aside we'd be able to see trends and averages with settings.

me as a pentium3 866mhz user would love to know more about that too :D

These are pretty safe "speedups", meaning they will only very seldomly give a quality change, compared to the best quality settings:

Reference frames = 1
Decision Quality = Best
Chroma Optimization = Off

I've found that generally the videos look better with Adaptive Deblocking Off and Deblocking at 0 or -1. But this *will* make larger changes in visible quality, unlike the above.

my fbs is just a bit slower than that...
but I;ve been haring mixed reaction to avc and speed/quality
hence why I;ve stayed away from it
but maybe with a bit more info<has read the faqs> I'll start to play with it...
