I have to disribute a Divx movie which will be played from CD. What is the maximum safe Kbps I have to set in divx encoding to make the movie play smoothly?

If you're talking about how fast data can be read off a cd-rom, that depends on the speed of the CD-Rom.
1X is 150KB/s, so 150x8 = 1200kbps.
2X = 2400kbps
4X = 4800kbps
The limitting factor will be the speed of the computer or device that is playing the movie, whether it has the processing power to decode the divx, not the cd-rom.

I encoded my movie at 1200Kbps and I played it on multiple PC, all of which are at least PIII 1100Mhz with a CD-ROM faster than 1x, but on some of them the movie does not play smoothly (It happens on a PIV 3Ghz too), what does it mean?

could be everything
codec problems, hardware problems, wrong settings somewhere....

I've got a similar question.
AFAIK, not all the DVD-players are capable of playing video at maximum allowed bitrate for the DVD-Video standard (~9700kbps). Is that true? And if so, how can i check that, except for the method of trying to play such a DVD at the store?
