View Full Version : Stutter / freeze problems, DVD-RB 0.68 & above

Everything I've rebuilt using DVD-RB 0.70 and 0.72 has serious problems on one player (Conia DVD8506B), while it either works fine or experiences fewer problems on another player (Polaroid DVP-300). They all work fine using IfoEdit's "DVD Play".
Movies are: Shrek 2; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; AristoCats; Princess Diaries 2; Spiderman 2.
In all cases, no pre-processing was done, and the only post-processing was using PGC Edit to start right in the main movie. Media is Memorex DVD+RW for the most part; unlabeled DVD+RW for 1. Always verify after writing. In all cases, used QuEnc 0.54; DGDecode.dll 2004/06/07; AVISynth.dll 2004/01/26.
I decided to use HP & the Prisoner of Azkaban for diagnostics, since it has no angles, and showed the problem right away (hangs right after the "PG rating"). This was initially backed up with 0.70.
First test was to use the original IFO files rather than those modified by PGC Edit. Still showed a problem; this time it hung in the FBI warning. (This was written to a new Memorex DVD+RW.)
Did a backup using DVD-RB 0.64 (with the same PGC Edit changes); worked fine. (Written to same disk as in previous test.)
Did a backup using DVD-RB 0.68 (with the same PGC Edit changes); showed same problem. (Written to same disk as in previous test.)
Please let me know if there's anything in particular you want me to look at.

I have done Shrek 2; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; Spiderman 2 with DVD-RB 70 and CCE SP 2.50 with no issues. I play on a Sony which will freeze or stall in a heart beat if everything is not perfectly in spec.

quenc still has an open issue with respect to vbv compliance(commonly referred to as max bitrate).. thats a possible issue. as a test you could try cce basic instead for 1 of the titles.

I have done all of the movies mentioned with the exception of Harry Potter with CCE Basic and default setup and all were absolutely perfect. As a matter of fact I haven't had a single problem with anything since I started using CCE Basic, even with some preprocessing with VOB Blanker to remove extras at times.

It seems odd that this could be the problem, since the only thing changing between some of the tests is the version of DVD-RB being used.

I assume the trial version would be OK?
One thing possibly worth noting - I'm stripping all audio except English and Spanish.

I did K-19: Widowmaker last night using DVD-RB .72, and I also found that it had very bad stuttering to the point it almost completely froze. This was playing it in PowerDVD straight from the HDD.
However, I beleive it might have been due to me altering rebuilder.inf after the prepare stage with RB-Opt 0.15. I will redo the project over the weekend without any type of processing outside of DVD-RB and see if the same thing happens.

Hello Mr. jdobbs
I've been using DVDrebuilder for a while now and
I believe that this is the best one click bottom
DVD back-up I've ever tried.
Once it's setup is truly one click bottom.
That is why I'll donate to this application, because is worth it.
Now to my only issue I'm having with it.
I'm backing up Kill Bill II using DVDrebuilder70 and CCE270
and when I play it im my PS2 I get some pauses when it changes
between chapters, one of them is from chapter 8 to chapter 9.
I've tried all kind of media so I don't think is media related.
This issue it's been treated in other posts too, and DVDrebuilder56
seemed to solve the pausing problem, but using that old version
I would not have access to the new options that I have in Dvdrebuilder70
Thanks for your Attention>>>
:)

Bugger :(! Using nothing other tha DVD-RB (and associated required tools) I got the same stutter/freezing issue as before. I've tried with both 0.72 and 0.73 and the same happens. I even went back to my source just to make sure the problem wasn't there from the original, but it plays fine. Let me know if there is anything you to test or details you need me to post here.

I tried converting K:19 Widowmaker again last night, this time I turned off all optional settings (half D1 & half space for extra's, decomb). Still no go. I'm going to try another converting a different multiamgle/interleaving title tonight to see if I get the same issue.

Has anyone tried DVD-RB 0.74? Is the stutter/freeze problem still there?

My issues are with a Sony player and:
Terminal
Stepford Wives
Without a Paddle (Angles)
Around the World in 80 Days
I don't get problems between Chapters but rather between Cells with different VOBIDs in the same Chapter.
So far Ver 74 seems to have fixed the Cell freeze I had on "Without a Paddle" but created a forever LOOP on one of the Angle transitions... I will be testing Stepford Wives (No Angles) to see if the FREEZE is resolved in that title with 74 and will post soon.

I am having problems with 0.72 and freezing. I can play the DVD normally but it won't fast forward/rewind properly. I don't remember this with 0.70.
The DVD is Basic Instinct. It keeps stuttering or freezing every 10 minutes or so. I tried rewinding and it skipped a whole 20 minutes in a couple of seconds.
I thought it was my Sony NS585 player but the same disc done with DVD Shrink is fine. It also did it in PowerDVD off the hard disk and DVD. I wished I checked PowerDVD first and saved burning a disc.
I used CCE 2.50 and 2 passes.

Could you do a test?
Check if in the .ecl of a cell that gives problem for the transition there is the line
seq_endcode=0
or
seq_endcode=1.
If seq_endcode=1, please change to 0, and encode the single cell again.
Then rebuild, test and report.
If it's already 0 ... I don't know what could be.

It isn't bad media as it has the problem on the hard disk. I have now done the disc with Shrink and DVD2DVD-R and the DVD works fine on both a +RW and the hard disk. Something must have gone wrong in the rebuild stage of DVD-RB.

If it's already 0 ... I don't know what could be. Freeze occurs at the transition of Cell 18 to Cell 19. Cell 18 was seq_endcode=1 so I changed it to seq_endcode=0. Encode, Rebuild and Freeze still persists.
RAW data has no freeze but does display a very very slight stutter in video at Cell transition with NO perceptable audio glitch.

DVDReMake Pro 2.6.4
AviSynth v2.5.5.0
CCESP v2.70.01.05
DVD-RB 0.74
DVD: TROY R1 NTSC
Getting video stutter at chapter changes. Each chapter M2V is followed by a single frame M2V of 30.5kb.
Tried changing seq_endcode=1 to seq_endcode=0 in some of the chapter M2V's, and re-encoding them with CCE, then rebuilding again--stutter still there between those chapters (during direct playback of the files from my hard drive in PowerDVD 6.0.)

I hate to keep repeating this... but no one seems to be listening. I will not respond to bugs that follow preprocessing.
I personally did Troy NTSC R1 -- it works fine if you don't change it before running DVD-RB.

I have a theory about the pre-processing anyhow. There is a feature in DVDReMake that skips over blanked segments (I assume navigationally.) Perhaps this is causing some compliance issues that appear when DVD-RB goes to work on this movie that is riddled with single frame segments.

hello guys
Is anybody else having problems with movies that skip between chapters in PS2?:confused:
HanSolo00
15th February 2005, 11:41
So far, I've only noticed it myself when I preprocess a DVD with ReMake where I decide to hide an entire PGC... like R1 Troy with the French titling (multi-angle.) IFOedit seems to be more reliable for removing angles like that. Incidentally, the skip I had isn't a player issue--it showed up playing the movie from the hard drive in PowerDVD. I suspect the problem is something to do with the way ReMake hides the removed angles; it doesn't get along with DVD-RB when you do that (at least for Troy, anyway.)
It seems to work fine if I don't hide the angle with ReMake before I use DVD-RB.

Yes, I have several titles with your problem:
Prince of Darkness (PAL R2)
HighLander (PAL R2)
And same more ( don't remember now )!
Do you know what was the solution?
Running BIG3 method (no compression, only reauthoring with Senarist), and guess what, everything was playable ;). This way at least I can save my 2 hour CCE encoding time ( 4 pass )!
Regards,
Fenix.

I think I may have fixed the cause for this... I corrected some inconsistencies in the FF/RW tables in discs that have cells broken into multiple segments. The problem would probably be more likely to happen on non-standard players like the PS-2... give it a try when v0.77
[ADDED] I'm not in competition with the Big 3 method.

nivremous we told you we need more info
1. stutter from disk or files in output folder (not just copied back from disk)
2. did you install with the installer
3. did the stutter continue with 1.06.1
4. what media did you use
5. what speed did you burn at
wmansir

Deen doesn't work very well with interlaced sources, it blends fields. I haven't tried it with anime, but with regular video it appears more as a ghosting effect. I don't think it would appear to be stutter though.
What region are you doing? and what kind of stutter are you experiencing? How often does it happen? Does the audio skip?

DVD Stutter at Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Edition 1 There have been 5 releases since v1.04 -- all of them with bug fixes. At least 5 of the bug fixes I looked at could be related to stutter under unique usage.... either upgrade or stop posting bugs. I can't fix what has been already fixed.

I appreciate the reply. I am grateful.
@jptheripper
1. Stutter occurs from the disk. I was not able to save the output files but I would attempt another rebuild
2. I install the software according to the basic instructions. Nothing special, except that I used CCE Basic 2.7
3. I am about to use 1.06.1
4. I used the same media that I used for a long time with DVD Shrink and lately with DVD Rebuilder only 4 stuttered out of 8 DVDs. The other DVDs that didn't stuttered are perfect and worked well with my players
5. The DVD medias have 16x write speed but I followed what everybody from the forum suggested - burn at slow speed. And that's what I did - I burned at 4x speed only.
@wmansir
Thank you very much for the tip wmansir. I'll change that settings too. I used Undot and Deen. The DVDs I'm backing up are PAL Region 4 (Australian - weird weather here in Aus too)
Samurai Champloo 1 - stuttered at the first episode near the middle where Jin and Mugen fought samurais separately. The scenes are like a DJ scratch (like the video is deliberately forwarded and backed - I reckon it looked cool like a DJ doing some video scratch - but that's how it is) - the stutter occured that it slowed everything down, the audio was left behind and scenes pausing with the audio just following up like some sort of a delay and it happened all through out the fight scene (and it was a very good fight scene too). Then it recovered just past that section.
Same thing occured to Samurai Champloo 4 but this time it can be seen at the intro song when two samurai armours as sliding together - the stutter on this one is only small and not as great as the Samurai Champloo 1.
Samurai Champloo 5 stuttered in the fourth episode. Same stuttering wherein the video pauses a little then audio follows up.
- Notes: Samurai Champloo DVDs are backed up with Steal Space options turned on. Undot and Deen added with CCE Basic 2.7 and settings basic - 20 and 16.
Then I read that I should not use Steal Space for episodes DVD so I tried to encode Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Edition 1 with Steal Space options disabled (or equal to 0). Same settings as above.
Results - the stuttering occurred as soon as I played the burned DVD. Right at the intro song of the first episode (where in you will see the map of the genesis of mankind) - the video slowed and paused then the audio just followed.
All of these stuttering occured on all of my players and computer DVD player.
Samurai Champloo and Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD's are PAL Region 4, Anime DVDs and interlaced.
By the way, I also encoded Anime series Full Metal Alchemist DVDs 3 - 5 with all the settings above including Undot and Deen, they all worked perfectly.
@jdobbs
Your software is the best thing!
Thank you all. I'll let you know of my next results. I'll be backing up soon again with changed settings. I appreciate any other advise.
Cheers.

good info thank you, and we look forward to seeing your results. Please do not delete the files on the computer until after the disk has been checked. If the disk stuttters, it is Extremely helpful to know if the rebuilt files stutter as well.

Is it possible to have only one configuration to be applied on all DVDs with DVD Rebuilder?
By the way, when I attempted to investigate the stuttering I read that this could be caused by bitrates jumping all over the place. So I downloaded a file DGIndex. It allowed me to watch VOBs and check the bitrates.
I tested the stuttering Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Edition 1 DVD and I did not see any stuttering on the DGIndex movie window.
I only backup Anime DVD's PAL.
Let you know of my progress.
Cheers.

Encoded Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum 6 with DVD Rebuilder Pro 1.07.1
CCE Basic
Full Backup (including movie and extras)
Menu encoding disabled
Undot().Deen() enabled
Shutdown at Completion enabled
DVD Overall size down to 43%
- Used ImgTool to create image and burned with DVD Decrypter
Tested: NO STUTTER
Quality: Medium to Bad, there are visible signs lessened quality (blurrings)
I have encoded Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum 1-5 with DVD Shrink all above 55% (including extras - all) and the quality is not as bad as with DVD Rebuilder (atleast everything is smooth and no blurred images).
I could not specify in DVD Rebuilder which extras I can set for lesser quality (unlike DVD Shrink which I managed to keep the main episodes with proper qualities). But in this case, if I use CCE SP 2.7 (latest version) with 4 VBR Passes (don't worry, I have this, I just don't like the length of time it required), would it make a difference to 43% DVD compression?
I appreciate any response.
jdobbs
16th February 2006, 19:57
It makes a huge difference when you're talking about "above 55%" and a setting of 43% (you get 28% more space for encoding with 55% -- and when you start getting into low bitrates that's the difference between night and day). Just as a test, run it through DVD Shrink at 43% and take a look at it. If you can even watch it at all I would be surprised.
Upgrade to v1.07.2... there are important bug fixes.

nivremous,
As you're a "disappointed dvd-rb user", why don't you try to backup your 7,5 GB+ movies to a CDR or rather to a floppy disk? :p
BTW a DL DVD is 7,95 GB, a DVDR5 is 4,38 GB (4,38/7,95=0,55 at worst). Why do you shrink your original to 43 %?
nivremous
17th February 2006, 01:48
I apologize if my previous post sounded negative.
I only meant to say that for now I didn't get a stutter on the first Anime DVD that I backed up with DVD Rebuilder after my first try that went disarray (4 DVDs stuttered out of 8 DVDs, read my previous posts).
You see, I have been backing up using DVD Shrink due to ease of use, reliability, and speed. I use DVD Rebuilder for the more high compression like Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum 6.
DVD Shrink shows 47.9% compression and DVD Rebuilder shows 44.5%. I bit the bullet and used DVD Rebuilder instead as I trust that DVD Rebuilder should provide better quality (provided that the stuttering issues are cleaned out - stuttered DVDs resulted from DVD Rebuilder really shook my nerves and confidence with the software but don't worry I'm on recovery wherein I am currently testing version 1.07.2)
So I only would like to know whether CCE SP 4 VBR pass is recommended if you have compression lower than 50%. Will that make any difference at all in quality?
I am still testing DVD Rebuilder 1.07.2 with my Anime DVD collection. I don't use Menu Encoding. I will let you know of my progress.
Any reply would be appreciated.

I have just completed backing up Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum 7.
It stuttered on the second half of the first episode. The settings that I have are as follows:
DVD Rebuilder 1.07.2 Pro
CCE Basic 25/16
Undot().Deen() enabled
No Menu Encoding
Full Backup
Shutdown on completion
The stuttering description:
The video would pause a little bit. Then would recover. It is worst on the burned DVD disc but when I checked the DVDFile folder (original folder that has been created on the computer by DVD Rebuilder) I found that it stuttered on the exact same place but not as significant as the DVD disc. Same description, it would pause a little bit, recover, and do it again.

So you rip down the movie and import the files to DVD-RB? No preprocessing?
If you compress a movie such a high level, maybe you should use menu encoding and settings like Steal Space from extras, Half D1 for extras, or even an encoding matrix for low bitrate animation.

@nivremous
Rule 8. How many times and in how many places are you going to post this?

I apologize.
I thought that there is a need to separate this to another thread as this is quite significant. You said that you have thousands of users but... how many of these users are actually backing up Anime DVDs? I mean real Anime DVD series episodes (not the movie Anime DVD's).
And there are some points I would like to set up as I will be reporting my solutions to aid all other Anime DVD Series owners who backs up their originals.

Lots are... and successfully.
I'd also point out that one user on one computer with no confirmation from others is not significant in my reasoning. There are hundreds of reasons why it could happen that are outside of the control of DVD Rebuilder.
I always fix any problems that are identified with DVD Rebuilder. A review of this forum will prove that. But I am NOT going to respond to insulting comments (as you have on more than one occasion thrown my way). Especially as I'm not completely certain as to your motives. This is especially true considering the fact that all of your 14 posts to date have been on this same subject and about the same discs -- and your "user title" seems to be designed to inflame.

i have only ever had this issue once, and thats since dvd-rb 0.48 to current 1.07.2 pro - this was down to poor hard drive performance cause by heavy fragmentation - although im not saying this is the cuase of the issue it may be a factor

I just got home and I quickly checked my latest test...
Settings:
DVD-RB Pro 1.07.2
No Menu Encoding
Full Backup
Undot() enabled
CCE SP 2.7 25/16/4 Passes
Shutdown on Completion
Subject:
Neon Genesis Evangelion 7 Platinum Edition, Interlaced, PAL 4 (Australia).
Results:
It stuttered on the exact same place.
Comments:
The changes that I have made compared to the first test was instead of using CCE Basic, I used CCE SP 2.7 and instead of 2 passes from Basic I used 4 passes. Instead of using Deen() (by the way I want to apologize to jdobbs about this on my previous post, I wanted to edit it and say that it wasn't jdobbs who told me that Deen() is not good but someone else. I apologize again but well... I can't change it now as the thread itself was already locked) I only used Undot().
Unfortunately the results are the same. The tips about maximum and minimum bitrates are not present on the DVD Rebuilder ini file. I never played with bitrates, I was only using the very basics of DVD RB Pro aside from Undot and Deen. The recommended settings for Animated DVDs (as previously discussed on this forum). The only difference is that I disabled the Menu encoding and added Undot filters. Everything else on the options are basic.
Sigh. I'll do another test.
I just don't get it. Neon Genesis Evangelion 6 Platinum edition worked fine with all my DVD Rebuilder settings without any stutterings. And mind you... I bought the Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD Platinum edition as a boxset. Shouldn't they have all similar manufacturer DVD encryptions?
Now in summary:
Neon Genesis Evangelion 1 Platinum - DVD RB Pro 1.04 - Stuttering DVD (this was last week. I'll try this one again tonight if I have the time with DVD RB Pro 1.07.2)
Neon Genesis Evangelion 6 Platinum - DVD RB Pro 1.07.2 - WORKING DVD, No Stuttering
Neon Genesis Evangelion 7 Platinum - DVD RB Pro 1.07.2 - Stuttering DVD
Sigh.
I'll do another test. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to send more than 1 MB of file to jdobbs but I'll try so jdobbs could see what I meant by stuttering. I'll cut up a VOB file with VobEdit and just reply to the email sent to me for DVD RB Pro 1.07.2.
Anyway... As you can see, I only do my DVD ripping and encoding on the weekends so maybe my next reply will be next week if not today.
Any reply would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Cheers...
:(
@Carpo
I will try that. I would check and see. I do have a number of DVDs on my hard drive that needs to be encoded/transcoded. Actually I am waiting to get my DVD Rebuilder working so I could get all these DVDs waiting in line to be burned. Anyway... they may need to stay there longer.
I'll work out another test on DVD RB 1.07.2 Pro. I'll let you know of my results today or next week.
@jdobbs
I really hope you are not offended by this that I posted my email to you. But I need to post this because I did promise everybody that I would post my test results.

I have a suspicion you have a title that is flawed in the original (like the PAL K-19)...
I also need:
The REBUILDER.INF, REBUILDER.INI, and REBUILDER.ECL files (just zip them) so I can see if there is anything unique in them.
