View Full Version : AutoGK wrong AR
Snowwhite
26th January 2005, 13:43
Hi to all
I've been trying to rip movies for some time now for my standalone DivX player
First I've tried DVDx but that gave me artifacts (blocks) on some frames and the encoding time was like 4 to 8 hours
Then I tried AutoGK wich is a great app
I encoded 2 movies with it without any probs, it cropped and resized properly
But now it encoded 2 movies with a bad Aspect Ratio (stretched vertically)
Tried playing m on 4:3 and 16:9 TV's but both show stretched vid, also different settings on my DivX player but no good
I tried Gordian knot to tweak the settings myself, and it seems I have to keep the borders to have a non stretched avi to play on my DivX player
I tried different settings with the 16:9 4:3 (non)anomorphic etc
So I have a good avi with borders and even the subtitles placed to my likes but I still wonder why I have to keep the borders to get a non stretched vid
I really want to keep using AutoGK cause its a few clicks n leave the rest to AutoGK wich does a great job at it normaly
An option for setting correct AR or borders/no borders would be great
Hope ya can help me with this issue, thx in advance

K Len0x
thx for the speedy reply bro
As for the FAQ I think AutoGK is correct in recognizing the AR (16:9)
I know out of my head it always recognizes 16:9 as source
ps. The vid box states 16:9 anamorphic at AR: 2:40:1
I deleted all the files from AutoGK so i'll try again and post the log
Here's the log for the one I did with GK

Also found this on the net somewhere
2.35:1 video = 640x272 (Anamorphic Widescreen)
1.85:1 video = 640x346
1.78:1 video = 640x360 (16:9 reported on the Box)
1.33:1 video = 640x480 ( 4:3 Fullscreen video )
Seems AutoGK adjust AR to 2.35:1 while it should be 1.78:1

Check AR for Twisted and Van Helsing, both around 1.8
And as far as I can remember those boxes also stated 2:40:1 Anamorphic Widescreen 16:9 so how come it does 2.40 with Collateral and Bourne Supremacy
"Can you please clearly describe the problem"
I'm getting a vertically stretched image on my 4:3 and 16:9 TV's with Collateral and Bourne Supremacy (last 2 movies I encoded)
Like its trying to fill up the frame
Van Helsing and Twisted (first 2 movies) were fine, filled frame with proper AR but prob cut off alot from left n right

Man, its player's problem!
Its well known fact that some of them have issues when AR is not exactly DVD-like (i.e. not 4:3 or 16:9). That's why 2.40:1 movies are not playing properly.

26th January 2005, 16:11
oh shit lol
So it could be possible that some movies are fine n other bad?
So I'll have to keep using Gordian Knot then and rip myself?
With Borders and 640 * 352 (1.8 AR)
It's a cheap DivX player (Magnum DVD 2004) so ur prob Right
I'll keep using Gordian Knot tho, its a great app!
Oh, one last question, whats ur suggestion on burning speed, max 4 or 8? can it cause skipping when burned 2 fast?
Thx and laters Len0x
len0x
26th January 2005, 16:13
Yes, when your player sees a source that is 2.40:1 it tries to make it look 1.77:1 instead - that's why its streched.

Start VirtualDubMod: Start....Run....C:\Program Files\AutoGK\VDubMod\VirtualDubMod.exe
Open your problem .avi file: File ... Open
Select a representative frame with the slider
Copy the frame to disk: Video ... Snapshot Source Frame. Save as type .png
Attach .png file to your next reply.

Well, I was sick of all the [Edited] i had to do to get a DVD copy so I bought a cheap Phillips DVDR1640k with some TDK DVD+R 4X speed DVD Box and grabbed DVDshrink from the net
Tried with "Collateral" movie, Easy like with AutoGK, easier actualy, compression was like 20 mins, burning 8 mins at 8X (great burner btw)
So all took bout half an hour compared to 4 hour when trying to do XviD/DivX encoding
Result, Fine ass quality movie with selectable subs (on/off) and AC3, no more stretching, skipping, etc
So I'm very happy with it, I highly recommend to all

i've been using dvd shrink for a LONG time and it rocks. but i still like to store my movies on my pc vido server as xvid/divx files for easy access, cause i'm lazy :)

Hi, first post. I'm very interested in the subject, as I use AutoGK myself. Encoded my whole X-Files collection (202 eps * 350MB!)
I think choosing the correct resolution is very important.
I recently encoded Gladiator (2.35:1 PAL) to XviD. AGK chose the res to be 608 x 272. Is this correct? What about 608 x 256?
I'm satisfied with the visual result, but I'm not sure if the res/AR is mathematical correct. (Yes, I'm a perfectionist) I try to follow the TDX 2002 rules regarding my xvids.
I tried to calculate resolutions by given AR:
(grey fields is values multiple by 8 or close) rest should be values
multiple by 16.

Is this at any use to anyone? Comments? Corrections?

Hello, and welcome to the forum.
According to autogk and ITU-R BT.601 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75998&highlight=autogk+AND+itu) AutoGK uses the ITU standard.
For additional info, see Resolutions, Aspect Ratios And The ITU-R BT.601 Standard (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42708).
