How do i convert XVID HD into lower resolution?

Hi there,

I have a movie file that is in XVID High definition format It is 700MB in size and with a resolution of 960 x 528 the movie has AC3 5.1 Sound and has a length of 43 minutes. All that i want to do is re-encode the resolution from the above to 720 x 480 or less and leave the sound untouched.

Does anybody know of any software which has a wizard that can convert files or is easy to use. I don't mind buying the software or using a trial, it would be better if the software is free to use. The software must be able to do what i wrote above in the first paragraph.

you can use avisynth to do the resizing

what is your target format? xvid? dvd?

VirtualDub with its internal resizer will probably be the most simplistic way to do that. But why resize at all?

I need to resize so i can play it in my xvid stand alone player

I have also used virtual dub and have found it too dificult, is there anything apart from virtual dub, virtual dub mod, avisynth, something like a commercial program that has a trial or you buy.

so, you encoded that xvid and dont know how to resize it...
i wonder how you encoded at that resolution if you dont know how to resize...

I did not encode this file, my friend did and he just gave it to me to watch, but i would like to watch it on my stand alone xvid player. So i need to re size the resolution to 720 x 480 or less. Do any of you know how to do that with any other sort of software apart from gordian knot, avisynth, virtual dub and virtual dub mod?

I have heard that virtual dub can do this but i am a complete newbie and from what i have read on the guides it never gets as far to how do you resize resolutions, If anybody could tell me how it's possible to resize then that would be great? I learn better with pictures, so if you have pictures then that's much better.

My friend is away at the moment so i cannot get in contact with him for a few weeks, and aswell i would like to learn how to do it for myself.

Please, read the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) again. You should not discuss about any copyrighted movies/clips that are not encoded by yourself. From what you said earlier, I guess you are talking about some hdtv-rip and those are also counted as warez.

Trust me i am not talking about any copyrighted material. The movie file i have got is not illegal. Why does everyone jump to conclusions when a guy asks about how to re-encode a movie file. If it is this much bother to you all, i will just wait till my friend gets back.

The easiest way is to use VirtualDub(mod) to resize and re-encode.
You can also use Dr. DivX (dowload the 6 month trial from divx.com) but the resulting file will be DivX and not Xvid.
Re-encoding, however, will hit the quality (both using xvid or divx).
I suggest to wait your friend and tell him to encode from the source but at a lower resolution.

Okay, I am going to stray off topic here...

If I toss a tape in my VCR and record, say, Law and Order, or, having not had a blank tape, downloaded the same episode from the internet, why is one legal and the other illegal?

Or, why is it illegal to take that videotape and lend it to my neighbour so that he can watch it?

Because taping shows off TV is covered under fair use while distributing said material is not.

Canadian copyright laws are just as strict as US laws so I don't get what you are talking about. And I'm glad I don't have to pay royalties on blank media like you Canadians do, so I'm glad I'm not Canadian :p

Actually Canadian Copyright law is looser in some areas, for example, I am legally allowed to make a backup of a dvd or video game or music cd for my own use. Since movie, music, and game producers have anti-copy protection on these media, does that not infringe on my rights if I am unable to back up my purchaed property?
