View Full Version : My burning method doesn't work now with newer Nero version

For a long time I used what I thought was the "definitive" method of burning DVD files to disc. It's the method described here:
http://www.dvdshrink.info/nero-udf-iso.php
I've burned many, many a disc that way ... basically, laying out the files with Nero in UDF/ISO mode. That was when I used Nero v6.0. Now I've updated to v6.6, and though the menus are slightly different I'm sure I'm keeping the essential settings the same.
But I get a disc that is sometimes completely unreadable, or at least unreadable in certain players. In fact, I seem to have ruined some RW discs altogether (no longer formattable or erasable).
So I gave it a try just dropping the files in using the "DVD Video Files" option with Nero Xpress, and now the disc seems to play just fine.
In the past I had read advice to avoid the "DVD Video files" option on the Nero Xpress menu, and I'm really wondering what's different about this version of Nero.
Ultimately, I really want to use a definitive method of burning. How about the method described in the stickied thread "DVD Burner FAQ" (using mkisofs)? Would you say that that is essentially about as "foolproof" as one can reasonably get? I ask because I've had problems with discs burned from *.img files with DVD Decrypter, specifically those discs not playing in ONE of my DVD players, an Apex model which usually plays everthing under the sun.

Ok, I've successfully used the mksiofs/DVD Decrypter method.
I should make note for anyone out there following the usage guide linked to from the stickied "DVD Burner FAQ" thread that the following command line example for creating an image needs to be more like this:
mkisofs -dvd-video -V "MY_VOLUME_LABEL" -o "D:\MYDVD.iso" "D:\folder_containing_audio&video_ts_folders"
The example leaves out the -V switch (for volume label). It won't work without it. Took me a while to figure this out.

Read this (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45025).
The method, of course, uses mkisofs/DVD Decrypter but PgcEdit does it all for you. No command line at all. Plus, it saves a minimum of 32K between each VTS.
Is the closest thing to a "definitive burn" (perhaps you could add +R bitsetting, if your burner supports it).

Yes, I believe I'll adopt this method and leave Nero behind.
I'd love to learn more about the nitty-gritty of file systems (ISO, Joliet, Rockridge, UDF, CDFS, etc.). Do you know of any good resource on the subject?
Thanks again,

Man am I glad someone else has problems with nero 6.0.
I have been trying to use Nero express for about 6 weeks and still cannot copy a unencrypted DVD. Program Hangs and locks up my omputer system.
I can use Nero with DVD shrink and burn a file from HD to DVD, but cannot copy a disk to disk.
Any one know of another deceint and working DVD program burner?

@larry
Nero 6.0 was almost just a beta test. 6.6 is more reliable, but I won't use it anymore. I've heard of ppl still being dissatisfied with 6.6 and going back to 6.3.1.25, which also was buggy.
Images are the way to go!
PgcEdit's solution is a brilliant 1 click. I now use it exclusively.
See here (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/Burning%20with%20PgcEdit.htm) for a reason why.

Many computer books will discuss the differences in file sytems and a google search may also help you. In terms of DVD, Ralph LaBarge's book is an excellent resource and so is Jim Taylor's DVD Demystified, which has an online free FAQ at http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html

TO fix the Nero 6.6 problem you need to change the book type to PHYSICAL Disc type From the automatic setting, which is the recorder book type.

To change the setting-- after you import the movie in recode hit the More button under the box to check to shut down after complete is the box for the changes that I discribed. under the copy disc option you need to select choose recorder and then select options and change it in there also.
