free/opensource stuff:
- avisynth
- virtualdub/mod
- DVDdecrypter
- QuEnc
- Xvid
- avs2yuv
- mplayer/mencoder
- LAME 3.9x (whatever's latest)

- the gimp
- dcRaw (damn useful - it gets me some extra pixels out of my canon g3)
- Nvu (web editor, haven't hit it hardcore yet)
- OpenOffice
- blender (i'm casually trying to learn it)
- zonealarm (pov version)
- DVDshrink
- DVDrebuilder
- lots of stuff i can't remember and almost never use
i want to make a full migration to opensource stuff and completely do away with payware, but that's probably not going to be possible in the near future (it's not got too far to go though, and the looming shadow of Longhorn is a good reason to migrate to Linux)
payware:
- photoshop
- illustrator
- cool edit/audition (these programs are barely even cosmetically different)
- premiere
- 3d studio max
- dreamweaver (phasing this one out)
- flash
- TMPGenc
- DVDmaestro
- nero
and the biggest payware of all... win2k.
i can't wait for a KarmaWare NLE to come out that can fully replace (and improve on, as this wouldn't be difficult) premiere. also, a motion-graphics app would be totally good news as well (perhaps CinePaint could expand in this direction?)

What a great idea for a thread...
If this thread grows, the information could prove most useful to "newbies".... Now... where's my list?
