Edit DVD subtitles

Here's my problem:

I have a DVD (Towering Inferno) with Portuguese subtitles. But I don't like the subtitles, and I would like to burn a backup with corrected subtitles. There's any way to extract subtitles, edit them and add them to a backup DVD ?

Subs on a dvd are not character-based, but present as bitmaps. You can use subrip or vsrip (vobsub) to extract the bitmaps & convert them to text using OCR.

The subtitles forum has stickies describing how to integrate new/modified subs into an existing dvd structure.
