Ok....have 2 burners in 5.25 bays...both are top two positions on ide cable...all cable select on xp pro...all perfect burns...now I got for free one of those 5.25" rack adapters so I just hot swap hard drives...I put this into the stop slot where one burner was (top spot on IDE cable, still cable select)....when I put the HD in this mobile rack all burns were aweful...buffer issues and slow burns.
So I pull the HD out (power off of course; not a real hot swap) and reboot...all is ok....why does this occur with the HD plugged in as described? Is there an issue with having a hard drive first on the IDE cable? Only thing I can think of is that the first plug on the cable defines that unit as master or something.....any insight here? the hard drive pluged in anywhere else is fine.
