is there a way to edit a video file without reencoding the video? I have not been able to find a way to do it.

DirectStream Copy won't do it if the cut is not exactly between two
keyframes. Let's say you have 30 frames and there are keyframes at
frame 1 and 30. If you remove frame 27 and 28 and do a DirectStream
Copy, those frames won't be removed which means you have to reencode.
If you dont remove frame 1 to 30, the cut will not be applied to the
new file.
You might try the "Fast Recompress" option.

you will only have to re-encode frame 29 then, not everything. :)

How would you do that in Vdub? One solution might be this:
Cut the movie in three parts using directstream copy
1 Part -> everything bevore frame 1
2 Part -> frame 1 to 30
3 Part -> everything after frame 30.
You would take part 2, cut the needed frames and reencode it via
full processing. Then you would join them and would have a perfectly
cut file, without reencoding it completely.

yup, thats it :)
its a bit more work, but it probably is faster than re-encoding the whole lot :)
