View Full Version : DVD DL kapacity in Scenarist vs. Nero

Could somebody give me explanation, why it is possible to burn 8.5GB on DL medium in Nero, but Sonic Scenarist (3.0.1) allows me to create projects only with cca 4.04GB per layer, so only 8.08GB on disc? The same situation on single layer discs, nero burns up to 4.5GB, but Sonic only 4GB. Even more strange is that if I create VOB files in Sonic (say 4,4GB - so Sonic wont burn these on DVD+-R), I can burn them without problem with Nero.
WTF? Am I missing something?

Difference between actual bytes and GBs probably

No, this is not the problem. As I wrote, when I generate VOBs for single layer DVD in Scenarist and burn them in Nero, there is always 500MB free space...

A dual layer DVD has 7.95 GB, no matter what application you have.
A single layer DVD has 4.37 GB. Nero can't burn more than that. Where does it say that it can burn 4.5 GB ? My Nero 5.5 does not indicate me how many GB I can burn on them, and I don't believe Nero 6 has an indication of GB.
The single layer limit is 4480 MB, which is 4.37 GB.

May be it is not exactly 4.5gb, but VOBs generated from Scenarist to fill SL DVD shows in Nero capacity somwehere near 4000MB line on indication bar and i can put few more hundreds of MB to DVD...

Not "maybe", it is definitely not. I can't be. The limit is at 4.37 GB.
Scenarist is an authoring program. It does not encode. You feed Scenarist with the elementary Streams of your video, and Scenarist won't re-encode them just to fill up a DVD.

To clear things out, I made a screenshot from scenarist. There is size dialog, where you can check actual size of data on DVD (and set layer break in case od DL).
There are actually two indicators as you can see: L0 and 0-100% bar and Total size+remaining fields. Problem is that when I fill disk according to L0 indicator, as I have been told by tech support, then actual capacity is almost 500MB less then real DVD capacity (check Remaining field). But these 500MB are over 100% size in L0 usage indicator and bar becomes red (which I assume indicates that something is wrong).
Problem is that I'm not sure whitch one is correct and the only way how to find it for sure is sending tapes to manufacturing lab. And this is not the best idea :-)
Sorry, coundt find where is attached file - linking directly

Don't trust what the Sort Tracks displays as it is usually always wrong! To find out if the disc is too big or not, create a disc image (at 2054 if you need copyright). If it builds, it's ok. If it doesn't build, it tells you how big the disc is, and you can work how much it over.
