xvid and hdtv rips

I was wondering if you can convert a HDTV signal to XVID but yet leaving it in a HDTV format?

And by doing so what size of a disk would it create, would this create to big of a disc?

Yes you can, though I have noticed my encoding on those vids takes awhile! Almost 10 hours for only one hour of video. This is using AutoGK.

The size will be around 2 Gigs or so for quailty.

So than it is possible to encode a 2 hour HDTV movie in Xvid format on about a 4.5g DVDR? If you encoded this though how much of a quality loss would you lose? And would the final outcome be in HDTV resolution? Than its a matter of playing the disk, is there any real stand alone DVD players available in North America that can play a XVID in HDTV format? The computer might be the only option for now to play this. If anybody has any insight it would be much appreciated.

That depends on the settings you use, but at that size you shouldn't notice much of a difference.

Unless you are doing a resize it'll stay in the exact same resolution.

Thank you airedale and Dhampir your answers sound very promising. From the sounds of it, it is possible to leave a HDTV rip in its native format and upscale or downscale to a HDTV ready set in xvid format. Now all I need to do is try this I'm very interested.

The AVeL Linkplayer2 from I-O Data (http://www.iodata.com/) can play DivX HD.
