Distribute xvid videos over the web.

I searched for an answer and it is probably such a newbie question that there are no answers for it. I want to be able to make an xvid video from a dv source for distribution over the web. I would like for people to be able to just download my video and be able to play it in any version of windows media player. Will an Xvid video be able to play in most versions of windows media player. Would I have better luck with divx or is there a better way to distribute videos over the web.

If you want people to be able to watch your videos with minimal fuss (if they are mostly computer-illiterate people), I guess MPEG-1 is the best choice.

However, I don't think that downloading and installing ffdshow for XviD playback would be that hard.
