with the latest firmware upgrade the xoro hsd 415 player now should be able to play .mp4 files including aac audio, asp video, vobsub subtitles and chapters
afaik the player uses the mediatek chip
the same features have been announced by xoro for their hsd 310 player
that firmware update is also interesting as its afaik the first one which adds aac playback to a player via firmware upgrade, which has been sold already for a long time.
i dunno how they managed the mpeg-4 licensing issues, but i think it shows that its possible for hardware manufacturers to later add new even licensing requiring features, like aac support, to your already bought player :)

So things may be looking up for all Vibratto-II chip-set based player owners!

i think this is again a sign that ess will release firmware updates for (all?) their players supporting .mp4 (nero announced ess as a partner)

the hsd 310 now supports .mp4 and aac too
Zhnujm, do you know what chip the xoro 400pro uses?

All as mentioned here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=82765) ;)
EDIT: But I must admit, I did not think this chp-set supported AAC audio. Maybe some of the later players chip-sets were upgraded!

till now the .mp4 status is as follows:
- ESS Vibratto-II supports .mp4 in Philips and Xoro players that use that chip (support on others will follow i assume)
- Zoran Vaddis 776 supports .mp4 in Siemssen's SCO 5000ND (vaddis 7 based players dont support it)
- Sigma Designs EM8560 (slightly modified EM8510) supports .mp4 in the KiSS DP-558
- Tevion DVD-4000 supports .mp4, but uses an unknown ESS chipset according to your thread (maybe vibratto-II, as no vibratto-s supports .mp4 till now?)
- Tevion DR 2004 supports .mp4, dunno chipset

Ah! I had no idea my 630 supported .mp4 container!! The only thing I heard about 630 and .mp4 was that it could play .avi that contains video demuxed from .mp4.
Ok, I just tested your XviD+Mp3+Subs.mp4. It looks good on my cheap 14" TV. But the video and audio are out of sync. Is that a problem in the file? Cheers.

That said, despite using the same chip-set, your Philips player currently only support MP3 audio, but the Xoro supports AAC audio too!
Has anybody had chance to test the Xoro with .MP4 encodes containing chapters and subtitles?
Does anybody know whether the Xoro can correctly detect .MP4 encodes containing anamorphic PAR signalling. And does this player b0rk when presented with .MP4 encodes containing anamorphic DAR signalling?
Cheers

if you want to test a whole collection of .mp4 files which will allow you to test all the real capabilities of your player regarding .mp4, have a look here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=88680) :)

Could be the subs. The other day I tested avi with muxed sub stream (using Gabest's SubMux 2.23) and got similar sync problem and the sub didn't show up.

Thanks. I'll test your collection and report back.

The file was muxed with mp4UI. So I guess the subs could be quite easily removed using the same tool :)
Talking about subs bond, I tried the 3No "subtitled" encodes on your disc: -

Anyway, I noticed that ShowTime player could display the two "vobsub" files perfectly but VLC media player could not!
And just to confirm, VLC player can display "vobsub" files created using Recode2 ;)

And just to confirm, VLC player can display "vobsub" files created using Recode2some things on that:
1) the file labelled as mp4ui was directly encoded with nero and only optimized with mp4ui (which shouldnt change anything in the subs)
2) showtime playes the file fine (as you said) and showtime is the benchmark for these subs imho
3) i have a whole bunch of vobsub .mp4 files created with nero and none of their subs gets displayed in vlc
4) the mp4ui vobsub file's subtitles got displayed in the siemssen
conclusion:
vlc's vobsub in .mp4 handling seems to be broken ;)

I've just looked at some of my other Recode2 encodes with sub's. And some work in VLC and some don't... How weird!
Is there a way of selecting chapters in VLC player?
EDIT: And I agree with your number 2 comment :)
Cheers
