OK well this my first thread and hope you guys can help me out big time. I want to make backups of two of my DVDs, I-Robot and The DAy after tomorow. The DVDs however are much to big to fit on a 4.7gb disk. I use DVD decrypeter and told it to rip the main movie files. Now it turns out the file still come over 4.7gb. I had a look into buying bigger disc but knocked it on the head. They are 10 euro each for a 8 somthing GB, rip off.

So I decided to use this great forum, and to see what can be done. I have also had this problem with saving private ryan. Is it a simple case of tough *!"@ cant copy to big or can I do something.

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

Dual-layer discs require DL capable burners, and yes, the media is expensive, as burnable DL media is a very new technology.

You should start with Doom9's guides. This is a link to a set of guides for DVD backup to DVD-R/DVD+R media: http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdbackup-guides.htm

Lastly, please be careful of the words you choose, this is a family-friendly forum, and profanity is not acceptable. See Rule #4 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm).

"Thou, shalt not covet dual-layer
burners. Gee, aren't we getting a
little specific, Lord?"

Sorry about the swear word. Well I have a dual layer dvd burner. But I just think like, 10 euro to copy and disc I already own, its a bit stupid. So what your telling me is that basicly I need to buy those discs of just forget about copying these big files.

Another thing is I actually have some DVD+r that are double layer, or dual format, which i assume is the same. But yet these discs are only still 4.7gb, so am I making a mistake as in I can fit the big dvds onto this double layer 4.7gb dvd+R?

Perhaps the other discs you have are dual sided, rather than dual layer?

Along with the guides that I recommended, you will also want to review the media, burner, and player databases at www.videohelp.com -- you may be able to avoid incompatibilities by reviewing your equipment and media there.

That list of guides is rather large and daunting. So you may have missed the section called DVD-9 -> 1 DVD±R.

I myself use DVDShrink to copy my Dual Layer (DVD-9) disks to Single Layer (DVD-5) -R media. It's fast and easy.

There is a great set of DVDShrink (http://dvdshrink.info) guides at the link I just inserted in this line.

I have DVD shrink. But like I said they dont fit. I have read all those guides before just didnt really state clear like. I have copied a few DVDs before this, worked fine, obviously cause they are smaller. I think I will just use one of the programmes to split it on two diss, just that, god one disc using 4.7 then one disk using 1gb.

They don't fit because you haven't "made" them fit. Use RLLMoFP's or jggimi's links and head off to the Guides page of their respective destinations. Decide if you want to do a "full disc backup", or "main movie only". If you get stuck, post a specific question on a specific guide and you'll receive help.

If you'll only take the time to read and study the guides you've been pointed to, you'll have success; if this is your first time out, expect to invest some time in the software's learning curve.

The guides are well laid-out. They work. We will help if you need it, but you're going to have to get set up better so that we can. Millions of people are using DVDShrink and these guides to transcode their DVD's....roll up your sleeves and join the club. ;)
