Maybe I'm wrong, but:
- Dual layer discs (DVD9), can be read up to 8x
- Single layer discs (DVD5), can be read up to 16x
Those values might varie depending on your hardware (DVD-Rom, HDD type..), but in my case:
- Standard HDD: Seagate 60GB Barracuda (7200rpm)
- Philips DVD-Rom
It usually reads SL at 12x and DL at 7.5x.

And about not reading above 2x it might be caused for the dma. Try to check if DMA is activated (Windows users: My PC -> right click over it -> admin.. -> hardware or devices -> ide -> first ide / second ide). I cannot remember which tab was (I'm now using Linux :) ) but if in one of the drop downs you see "Pio Mode", change it to "DMA if possible"

Hope it works - See ya ;)

Plextors limit the speed of ripping dvd video. To avoid this limitation (although it's supposed to give you better quality) try the following:

1. press the the EJECT button on the drive (while closed and empty) and hold it several seconds. The drive should give 3 short blinks. Release the button, it will eject and then you insert the disk. However, it doesn't "remember" this setting, so you have to do it every time. :(

2. DVD Decrypter has a setting for this.

3. Maybe you can find a modified firmware (which is a VERY DANGEROUS thing!)

Good luck

hey, I have got a plextor, and yes it might be the problem, I am going to try your method as I have two plextor drives a 716a and a 116a, all with original firmware, well at least firmware that is available in plextor website
what's the setting you are talking about in dvd decrypter?, can you give me some further information about this matter please? thank you

Probably it's settings->device in dvddecrypter (I don't own a plextor) ... There are plenty of drives which are locked to 2x when reading CSS-encrypted discs. Not many offer an easy workaround like Plextor.
