Hello, I think this is my first post, I dont really remember. Anyway... I was browsing divx.com and came across something called DivX HD (http://www.divx.com/hd/?hppromos=hdpage). The trailers on their website look amazing! So... I was wondering if there is anyway to make DivX HD files from DVD's, is there?

You can make on your own let say Xvid HD samples.
Record digitaly from HD sattv channel in Europe it is 1920x1088 interlaced.
Process/compress this record with VirtualDubMod or DVD2AVIt3 to 1920x1080 or 1280x720 setting 4Mb rate using Xvid and you will get Xvid HD samples.

you can do that with the DivX Codec too! In fact DivX has a high definition profile built right in to every current DivX bundle!

Hi LordRPI,

I am familiar with DivX product family, and I must say onestly that I am angry for you that you lost Divx4.12 codec way. Even today I am using it for my HD sattv record processing tests on equal base with Xvid and 3ivx.
Also with live tv recording to .avi especialy without cropping as stand alone codec /not in the frames of ffdshow/ 4.12 is one of quickest.
It is strange for me that others are keeping in general line drawn by Divx 4.12 but not DivX Team.
I hope that in near future DivX6 will get vigor of 4.12 without using viagra.

you can encode HD with any codec! yes ANY

upsize your dvd via avisynth and encode with divx, xvid or whatever...

DVDs are only 720x480 NTSC / 720x576 PAL. As eb described, HDTV has much higher resolution. Bond is technically correct, you can upsize from DVD sources to HD resolutions, but .... you will not have HD quality video.

If I was to upsize the DVD and then make it into a DivX HD file would the DivX HD file be smaller than the origional DVD's file?

If medium bitrate of DVD is 8Mb/s and you will use for Divx.Xvid,3ivx or sex264 let say 4Mb/s than will be 2x smaller.

If you read the first post in the first link of the two I provided, you will see that DivX Networks encoded these at 3500 kbps.

In fact DivX use q3/q4 for these HD encoding : Frame in high motion could be verry blocky ...

MPEG2 720*576 at 8 Mbit is a very high quality ("quality" by pixel) and MPEG4 ASP 1280*720 at 4 Mbps is a relatively low quality ("quality" by pixel) ...

MPEG4-ASP Encoding at quant. 2 is considirated as ´loseless´ (visually loseless but not really). for example if DVD 720x480 has bitrate 7 mbit/s, so ´loseless´ will be at 3,5 mbit/s. (approx!!!)

if ressolution is 1280x720 then loseless encoding requires 2,666 times more bitrate than 720x480 .
so > 2,6666*3,5 = 9 mbit/s. Thatīs why WMV 9 HD-DVD samples has bitrate approx. 7-9 mbit/s. It´s normal.

As conclusion, 3.3-3.5 Divx5 Pro 1280x720 can´t be considirated as HD

Some people has mentioned divx4. I also tried Divx4 and Divx5 , imho divx4 provides more details (at high bitrates).

MPEG Quantization is a lossy compression technology, since Quantizers greater than 1 are used. See pages 27-28 and 89-90 of the DivX User Guide (http://www.divx.com/divx/divxpro/guides/) for a quick overview of MPEG Quantizers and Matrices.

The most common lossless codec used by members is HuffYUV. It is commonly used for A->D capture and editing, since it has no image loss, generation after generation.

That confusion aside, the value commonly used to examine MPEG compression at a variety of bitrates and resolutions is:Bits / pixels * framesThis is the formula used by Gordian Knot's calculator to maximize quality of a multipass encoding, through a technique known as compressibility testing. A sampling of the entire content is encoded at Quantizer 2, and a maximum attainable bitrate at that resolution is established. The GK operator then selects resolutions and/or bitrates that in current best practice -- for both DivX and XviD -- produces a bits per pixels times frames value that is 60%-80% of the value produceable by the Quantizer 2 test. AutoGK uses the same technique, and aims for 75% of the maximum.

Personally speaking, I've never really liked the current phraseology used to describe the visual quality of video content!

Why do we use the expression "standard-definition" to describe 720x480/576 video content, surely "Standard Resolution" would have been more accurate?

And similarly, why do we use the expression "high-definition" to describe 1280x720 and 1920x1080 video content, when surely "High-Resolution" would have been more accurate?

As we should all know, definition and resolution are not the same thing. But for some reason the A/V industry is trying to confusing people into thinking they are!

In any event, most modern dictionaries may describe "definition" and "resolution" thus: -

"Definition" Clarity of visual presentation

"Resolution" The degree of detail available in an image. Usually expressed as pixels or as dots per square inch
