Hi,

I reallyenjoy working with AutoGK, it's soooo easy.
And hope to better understand dvd/xvid/film and their jargon/settings
in the near future

XVID just rocks!

But now this..

I ripped a movie (One Hour Photo) to my hd so wont have to
listen to that noisy lite-on dvd next to my ears.
And converted it to xvid with autogk..

Now in the bgeinning of this movie you have "white text on
a black background" scrolling around on the screen.

When I watch this avi on my tv-set, you can clearly see the
mpeg artifacts around the white letters due to something like
poor jpeg compression.

Is there a way around this??

These are "ringing" artifacts caused by over compressing with a matrix that tries to keep the high frequency DCT coefficients. These are reduced by using H263 rather then MPEG quant matrices (you could also try one of many custom matrices - use search as there is a lot of info on custom matrices in this forum) or increasing the target size. Another technique to reduce the appearance of ringing is to add noise during playback with ffdshow.
