Hey, I'm having a hell of a problem. For some mysterious reason, my DVD-R drive (Toshiba SD-5002) is now stuttering in under 5 minutes of playback of a video on any disc I've previously burned. It gets so bad that it's basically unplayable after a point. I was pretty suspicious of the hardware (burner or motherboard) but the hardware is FINE. I went and installed a copy of Linux and got it to play the video of the DVD-R smooth as butter.

The problem is that since I suck at Linux and the codecs don't look as good as what I have refined in Windows, I'm still stuck. I've tried updating my motherboard IDE drivers, made sure UltraDMA mode 2 was enabled, even did a format/reinstall of Windows, I keep getting the same damn problem.

My best guess now is that this could be a weird motherboard setting I don't know about that's affecting Windows, but not Linux. Does anyone have any ideas on this? I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

Nevermind, after a night of testing, I found out what the hell was going on, it wasn't the drive at all, but Cyberlink's AC3 Decoder on 6 channel mode. For some reason it causes access to the DVD drive to be way heavier. Using AC3Filter, it only access the drive every few seconds, with the LED light only blinking every now and then. Using Cyberlink's, it's practically on solid. It could just be the version I have too, I hope so since I prefer its surround to AC3Filter's. Hope this helps somebody else.

Thanks for posting the resolution...so often people post a problem like this, and they fix it, but never bother to respond with what the problem was.
