Since the old suggestion thread for 0.46 hasn't been updated since last October, here is a fresh new one:

Movie-only: skip menus and keep only the movie
Create new directory: when browsing for Output path
Display estimated compression ratio/space used after processing

Enough for a start, isn't it?

Hi,

I have three suggestion. They are tough ones, but nothing Mr. Jdobbs can't handle :)

1.- Reencode menus ( got some dvds with near 1 Gb menu :( )
2.- Strip foreing LUs from menus (that's easy, I presume :) )
3.- Reencode multiangle sections

I encourage Jdobbs to keep his awsome job this 2005, it's incredible what this man has achieved.

* Movie-only: skip menus and keep only the movie
You can reauthor with DVD Shrink then run that thru DVD-RB, or use one of the many 'movie only' CCE programs (DVD2SVCD, DVD2DVDR, ect).

* Create new directory: when browsing for Output path
In another thread jdobbs said he was looking into it already.

* Display estimated compression ratio/space used after processing
That's already done in the status window after the prepare step.

- Reduction Level for DVD-5: 58.7%
- Overall Bitrate : 2,442Kbs
- Space for Video : 4,000,276KB

Are you asking for something else, or do you not see this? I'm not sure if it shows up if you don't have 'verbose status window" checked.

I have one very small gripe. When you go to Help > Check for latest version, it still seems to be hard coded to open the window in IE. Was (is) their a reason for that? VERY small I know, but some of us might not use IE for very specific reasons. Thank you for your time.

I noticed that too, I use Firefox, maybe he can have it open default browser.

I would have thought it would use whatever browser you have selected as your default.

Well dang, I wonder why Windows refuses (has been refusing) to let us use our browsers of choice for...well as long as you have had the link? That is annoying I wouldn't have guess that it was M$ at its best. Well please don't go and kill yourself over this little feature it's not that pressing, we do get an email telling us when a new version has been made available to download. Your program is amazing please don't let anyone tell you any different. Just letting you know I guess. Later.

While everyone is still alive :D I would like to make a suggestion which IMO is easy/fast to implement and has a huge effect on encoding time.

A lot of us have used RB-farm and have liked it's simplicity and effectiveness. It's shortcomings are that it only supports CCE and that it is not really being developed (eg no support for CCE 2.70 or other encoders for that matter).

As I see it, most of the work needed to make RB-farm work is the handling of the encoder, and that is already coded into DVD-RB for all supported encoders. Hence I suggest the introduction of multi-computer support to DVD-RB, via this simple algorithm:

1. Encode (remote) avs stream.
2. Generate necessary files.
3. Inform a progress file/directory of what has been done.
4. Restart ftom step 1.

This would be the algorithm even the server machine would use. It would just use a progress file/directory (like "farm_status") so as not to re-encode a segment undertaken by another host and inform other machines of the servers paths to the files and encoders (user-is-the-bug prevention). At the end, the server would automatically rebuild the final dvd.

Without trying to be a smartass, it seems to me that it would take Jdobbs only a couple of hours to code this. It doesn't even need to be a separate option, it can be the standard way of encoding, so that a machine can arbitrarily join in.

It would be nice to be able to cut encoding time in half. Maybe this can be the first step to spawning two encoder processes for SMP computers (dual core is coming!!).

Best regards to Samurai coder, keep up the good work!

I have only one suggestion to the (great) program:
Could there be an option where DVD-RB would create an .ISO-file from work done? I mean that now there comes directory where you have VIDEO_TS -folder. This folder (or its insides) needs to be burned with third-party program, and very often this program isn't free (i.e. Nero). If there would be an .ISO -file, you could burn it with DVDDecrypter (which is free). This would also minimize the burn errors and all the helpers here in Doom9 could be sure that the burning process is gone fine.

Can this be concidered as option?

Thank you,

You can make your own iso file with the free program Imgtool Classic (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Vobtools/Classic_0.91.4.zip).

Or you can use DVD Shrink with no compression choosing a .ISO as output.

This has the added advantage that Shrink made a quick analysis of the DVD structure when opening the directory, which helps to detect some errors (missing files, etc) that otherwise could creep undetected.

Another advantage of Shrink for this task is that if you uncheck the audios you have chossen no backup in RB, they also dissapear from the selections of the remote control of your stanalone DVD player(where you can chose by cycling among the available options by pressing the "audio" buton)

I'd also like DVD-RB update the .ifos to remove the audio streams left out.
I have to do it by hand with ifoedit after the rebuilt.
