Is it alredy possible to answer such a question ?
I always used .ogm with vorbis audio for my CDs and I'm perfectly satisfied, but now I'm considering to switch to something which could be played with more probability in next generation standalones. MP4 seems te way to go but:
- How much sure can we be it'll be supported by next generation dvd players?
- Will different MPEG4 compliant codec be supported differently ? For example divx but not xvid, mp3 but not aac.

Thanks for all answers

:search:

for video both will support mpeg-4 avc, vc-1 and mpeg-2 (so not mpeg-4 asp: xvid, divx5 aso...)
for audio it will support dts, ac3 (i think), mlp and maybe something else i dont remember too (but not aac, vorbis, mp3, wma aso, which are used widely for dvd backups already)
as container bluray will use mpeg-2 transport streams (.mpg), so neither .ogm, .avi, .mp4, .mkv or whatever else will is often used today

basically you can say that none of the currently done backups will be supported

There's no hope :(

Thanks for your answer. I used the search but without much result.
I'll search for hd-dvd container.

I don't really understand why they're not going to support mp4. mp4 comes with all features one can desire and more, and they still get stuck with that crappy menu system of today DVDs?

At least blu ray supports java xlets and stuff like that. Container only contains data and has nothing to do with anything else.

I know it's only a container but if they would support mp4 they would also support many MPEG-4 Standard formats, I suppose. Anyway that's not the case :(
