Pal or NTSC for Anime?

Hey guys, I've been getting into anime lately and am thinking of buying some dvds of it. The problem is should I get ntsc dvd's or pal dvd's. Although I've had no experience with ntsc anime dvd's, I used some pal ones before and sometime the blending can get pretty awful. I was wonding what ntsc ones are like and whether you had any recomendations on either?

Well since most anime is NTSC since that is the standard Japan uses in this particular instance NTSC versions would be prefferable.

the one and only exception is when the PAL copy has come off a 24p HD master and been sped-up, in which case it will look awesome.

the only titles i know where this is the case are Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex, and Dead Leaves (an OVA). both are released in the UK by Manga Entertainment, so it looks like they're getting the message that PAL anime is crapful on anything but a modest-sized interlaced CRT TV.

if you can find out beforehand what the disc is like, i'd buy both formats. anything hybrid (30p + 24 telecine) will be a field-blend in PAL. very new stuff may be 24p though. with feature films (made in 24p obviously), it's a bit of a lottery, and usually depends on how nice the americans are in giving the PAL authoring house an NTSC or PAL master to work with.

generally, i'd buy my anime in NTSC.

Does anyone know whether the Mazinkaiser dvd's in pal are any good (as in 24p), or should one get the ntsc versions?

To tell you the truth, the PAL version is a lot cheaper and 20minutes longer... is that strange or what.

My Japanese and English versions (NTSCs) are fine. Personally, I really like Getter Robo alot better than Mazinkaiser.

What was done about the opening on the PAL version? It looks like 30p on the NTSC DVDs...

actually, i have a feeling is was drop-frame decimated. it certainly looks a bit jerky... too bad the intro wasn't made in 24p as well - from a 3d point of view it's win-win, as 24p takes less time to render and will integrate better with the rest of the show (unlike the crappy 3d in Initial D... though it suits the fugly fish-mouthed character designs. God, i hate that show).
