there is a way to convert a DVD Pal to a DVD NTSC ?

I know that Procoder 2 works perfectly for converting the video data and the sound. but Procoder don't support AC3 output, so I don't want to use procoder for the sound.

IF I have dvd-rb to create the .avs file, and I convert myself all the .mv to nstc format. DVD-rb will be able to recreate the right audio output ? (sync).

I'm looking for a way to convert a full pal dvd to ntsc dvd with menus and extras.

thanks

Seems I'm not the only one with this question. I just posted the same question more or less. I wish I would of seen your post before I posted mine that way I can just follow this thread instead of two :)

Also, what is dvd-rb? I think that is what you wrote as I can't see your original post while replying.

Thanx in advance,

Lukezter

it could be done, but there are a few steps that rebuilder doesnt currently do.

to go to ntsc you have to change the framerate to 23.976 then apply 3:2 pulldown to make a 29.97 (ntsc) video). framerate change can be done in cce, pulldown cant to my knowledge.

as for the audio, ,you also need to do a frame rate change. while i think cce can do this it is not good at it, most ppl use bewseet, especially with you want to keep ac3 or dts.

right now to do the conversion my steps are:
demux video and audio
convert audio to 23.976 with besweet and ac3machine front end
generate d2v file for video with dvd2avi
write avs script (with crop values from virtualdub) to do conversion using assumefps=23.976 and lanczos resize
apply pulldown and remux with new chapter points with dvdlab pro

Use the search - the difficulties in using DVDRB to convert formats has been discussed in previous threads. I doubt DVDRB will ever offer this option, unless the tool becomes absolutely perfect and jdobbs gets really bored.

I used the search before, but never find a one click solution to convert pal->ntsc. I think I just found examples how to convert the main movie only.

jptheripper, your method is perfect? What I mean is, if I'm to go thru all those steps, what is the final product quality like?

And thanx for the replies to everyone else. This DVDRB, is it good?

I have been all over the net looking for the answer to the simple question "convert pal to ntsc" and all everyone does is explain the difference between the 2!!! There has to be a simple way to do this other then purchase a DVD player that does both!! I have looking at several dvd players and even the best ones the aspect ratio was way out to lunch!!!
Could someone please do something here, the love DVD RB, it is one of the best program out there to down size your DVD-9s but a really, really , REeAaaaLLLYy great feature for the guys and gals that make is great program is to have it convert ntsc-pal and pal-ntsc...

much thx

I've got a PAL title I specifically purchased because it is so vastly superior in quality to the NTSC release (it's actually a completely different transfer.)

Now, while I haven't yet finished the conversion project, I have gotten great results with ProCoder 2.0 on the demuxed video and audio components... and I used BeSweet to fix the audio. From what I've seen and read, ProCoder does a much better job than any AVIsynth script can do at PAL->NTSC.

So, conversion of main movie is easy. As for the menus, however, they are a challenge of their own. I had them demuxed as well, and extracted the subpictures to BMP files (the overlay images used for the custom buttons etc) but haven't attempted to put them back together completely in DVD-Lab or other authoring app as of yet--but that is mainly just an issue of making time to finish it.

I'd like to try NuMenu4u on the menu portions to see if the menu conversion in there is satisfactory before I go ahead and spend all this time rebuilding the menus from scratch.

Thanx for all the responses. What I have seen so far tho', is that there are conflicting methods to convert PAL->NTSC. Some of you said it was easy while some seem to say it is a difficult procedure. Does anyone have a clear concise link that explains the EASY way to do this and also the "harder" way? I really do need to learn how to do this as friends and relatives as sending me movies from all over the place.

Thanx for the help everyone who responded...

lukezter,

The harder way using avisynth would involve something similar to this (http://www.avisynth.org/SmoothDeinterlaceFunctions). Here's a second opinion (http://www.geocities.com/xesdeeni2001/StandardsConversion/#PALVideoDVD2NTSCDVD) on the hard way. You won't likely be using DVD-RB for this task any time soon.

One click solutions will probably involve $$, be crappy, or both. I know that TMPGEc has no trouble encoding to any standard, but it will hardly go from DVD to DVD.

Well, I've personally never tried a complete DVD, but there is a little program called DVDSanta, that will convert an entire DVD from PAL to NTSC. I believe you can download a demo that would allow you to try it, but the video would probably have a watermark on it, but that would at least allow you to see how well the results are before you spent money on it! I believe it converts the menus and everything. I've used DVDSanta to convert avi/xvids to DVD/SVCD, but I've never done an entire DVD yet. The website is www.dvdsanta.com (http://www.dvdsanta.com/) and the specific info in the FAQ that says it will convert PAL DVDs to NTSC DVDs is here: PAL-->NTSC DVD FAQ (http://www.dvdsanta.com/faq.html#102) I'd love to hear if it works, and how well, so please post your findings if you try it! I've got a few PAL DVDs that are on my list to convert someday!:)

If you want to keep the menus, I don't think there is an easy solution anywhere. I'd love to see an easy to use menu editing program that will open up a dvd menu and let you edit it.

If you want to do just the main feature, this is what I do and have had good success with:

Use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode, select the main movie (make sure demuxing of streams is enabled), and demux the video and audio streams to your hard drive. You should have a video (.m2v) and at least one audio (.ac3) file.

Use TMPGEnc with the DVD NTSC profile to convert the video (only) to the correct format (as Elementary Stream .m2v or System Stream .mpg)

You can then use TMPGEnc DVD Author or IFOEdit (free!) to re-author the video and audio into dvd format files.

No pissing about with the audio is necessary.

You will have to know what bitrate to use for your new mpg in tmpgenc as well. (HINT: if the movie is letterboxed, unlock the aspect ratio in the tmpgenc menu and set it to 16:9, then you can make a proper letterboxed dvd)

But this is the simplest method available. TMPGEnc DVD Author will also let you customize menus a bit, but will only allow 1 video and 1 audio stream, while IFOEdit allows more streams.

For Procoder users....while the Procoder cannot take ac-3, could you not just convert the ac-3 to WAV and then re-encode the video and WAV file with procoder and then convert back to AC-3 later with the procoder made (and presumably fixed) WAV file? This would skip the Besweet fixing step.

Dvd remake is an incredible menu editing program.

Pal to ntsc with menus is tough, but not that bad. Basically you have to recode the menus to ntsc resolution (not sure if numenu4u can do this , i have tried with cce but exporting a menu to m2v files is problematic) then use dvd remake to move and fix the buttons.

potential is there

NuMenu4u will do a format conversion for you. Check out the avisynth tab ;)

I have tried NuMenu4u several times and have yet to get it working properly, I have 2.67 cce and 3.01 in Sonic Scenarist newest AviSynth. I have even tried it Procoder 2.01 with no luck!!!

In my case, the ripping process gave me 2 .m2v and 2 .ac3 files. Now I want to encode them into CCE, how can I join those splitted files together?

not very helpful is it!!

Why not explain what went wrong, what you did to fix it (assuming you know what you are doing), and in future if these FREE apps don't work quite as expected, work with us to fix it rather than your above statement.

Hehehe, well, you've all certainly gave me something to chew on with all these possible successful methods. Although it seems what works for one might not for the other(maybe OS related, degree of knowledge/comfort with several different apps etc.), all I need is the time to try them all. The menu seems to be the common hickup in your responses my friends. I'll get to work on different methods and since, alas, money is a factor, I'll have to stick to the freebies for the time being. But even the freebies are awesome proggies in themselves so I have hope.

Once again, thanx for to all for the advice ,
