hello everybody!
Concerning the fast development of codecs (as nero digital), I assume that I'd have to buy a new stand-alones DVD-players once a year, if I want to stick to the latest (best) codec available, in the next few years.
That makes me thinking about DVD-shrink, to back up my DVD-movies ("back to the sources", you could say). But then again, I'd have to use one DVD (4,5Gbyte) for one back up, in contrast to nero digital, needing s.th. like 1,5Gbyte or 2,25Gbyte for one movie (to get results which are as close as possible to the original).
Has anybody experiences, comparing these options?
Thanks for sharing your experiences!

hi,

if you want your copies to play on standalones for the years to come, copying to dvd is imho the only option that can more or less guarantee that. Even upcominf HD DVD players (like blue ray etc) will most likely support those standard DVDs, nero digital has a far more uncertain future. i think nobody can tell if it will be around in a couple of years, and even less if it will then be supported by current standalones.

in addition i'd say the price of dvd media has dropped far enough to justify the usage of 1 whole DVD per movie you back up. after all you have payed 10 to 25 bucks (or even more) for your original so you might aswell spend another buck on the backup that might just save you from loosing the rightfully acquired content.

...thank's for your answer. But do you think, a dvd-shrink backup is as good as a good backup with nero digital?

i don't think you'll notice a difference, especially if you do movie only backups in dvdshrink and only keep 2 audio tracks (or so)
