So first off, let me point out that I'm in the newbie section for a reason. I definately fit the title when it comes to dvd ripping. I'm sure my question has probably been asked before but the search function doesn't want to work for me.

I need to burn some dvds to cds. This would be easiest done by converting them to avi wouldn't it?

Like I said, I'm in the newbie section for a reason. Can anyone give me a hand?

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

One of the things you know by now is that AVI is a "container." It can hold lots of different types of video and audio.

Most members who create AVI from DVD here use one of the popular MPEG-4 video codecs. CODEC is an acronym which means "COmpressor / DECompressor," and MPEG-4 is a widely used compression standard. There are many implementations, the most popular in current use among our membership are probably XviD and DivX.

You can find tools and guides for converting DVDs to AVI files (with DivX and/or XviD) by looking in the DivX / XviD (http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm) section of Doom9's Guides.

If you'd like more information about MPEG-4 codecs: DivX, XviD, and many others, you can take a look at Doom9's Codec Comparisons (http://www.doom9.org/codec-comparisons.htm). That link is part of a section of helpful links known as The Basics (http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics.htm).

Good luck! Come back when you have specific questions, and we'll be happy to help.
