I wanna make an xvid backup of this anime. Should I use Cartoon mode. My pc is very slow and it will take a whiile to to this, so I do not want to <<edited per R4>>. I have never backed up an anime before. Will there be a lot of artifacts, even with a 2cd rip? Would Cartoon mode help, or is that just for american cartoons?

depends on what targetsize you are for.
and cartoon mode is not recommended for anime, generally, because of the much more detailed drawings (specially backgrounds) and more draw-per-second rate (cant explain that in english). Miyazaki movies arent much more detailed than an american cartoon, indeed. but I would not use cartoon mode anyway. As it is a 2h movie, if its a 1 cd rip I would choose (in autogk)
-custom target size 703 (will fit without overburning)
-mp3 vbr 112 (or even 96) japanese track
-resolution set to minimum of 576 (autogk will probably choose that one)
-burnt-in subs
-credit compression (20%) and b/w option (but check if there are no images whilst credits rolling -cant remember) and adjustsubs hidden options (and not any other ones, especially not sharpmatrix).
if its a 2cd rip (or aimed at dvd-r) change to:
-res min 640
-ac3/dts sound
-dont choose a custom target size like 1406 because file wont get split (well, you can manually do that with vdm indeed)

I just encoded Spirited away myself the other day to a 2gig file and it looks perfect, and i didnt enable cartoon mode or anything.
BTW the spirited away dvd i have has an error with the sound. In Surround mode the center channel sound is wrongly put on the left channel, so all speech is there, which is highly annoying. I had to use the 2 channel track (for some reason dr.divx regarded the 2 channel track as the default, but all other encoders didnt even see the 2 channel mode and wanted surround mode with the skew centerchannel).
Good luck.

Well, I made a 2cd rip without cartoon mode, and I got a compressibilty of around 90%. I think it choose 720 as the resolution. It looks perfect.
Thank you len0x for making such an incredible program.

wow, 90 per cent seems too much for that kind of content, are you surethe WHOLE movie looks good-great? maybe a longer comptest (in gk, not in agk) would give you more accurate results (i.e. less compressibility) ...or maybe the movie is just like that.
I have in the past problems with the agk comptest with some movies: comptest detected high compressibillity whilst the movie was quite noisy then the automated result was not good at all (but this can easily be fixed with the advanced options though: thats what I did)

I watched most of it and it is really sharp. There are a few artifacts in areas of pure colour, by that I mean no shading or gradiations, just plain blue or red etc... This is very minimal and barely even noticeable.
I am very pleased!
