couple questions

I feel really stupid having to ask these questions, but ive been reading forums for the last 4 days constantly and still cant find any clear answers. Ive done alot of encoding and programming in the past, but i just picked up a dvd burner last month and its thrown my world into a sort of temp chaos. I am now able to make perfect backups of any dvds with the help of dvd x copy platinum within 20- 30 miniutes usually.....but, making copies of the backups takes over an hour on any program i have tried. I have to believe that if x copy platinum can burn this to disc in under 10 miniutes ( 20 min encoding), then there has to be a way of making copies of said backups much faster. Ive seen alot of discussions about limited 1x burning on certain programs....basically i just need the easiest way to burn perfect copies of my backups( possible?/programs/settings). Now this second question is probably worse but i might as well do this all at once. I figured when i purchased a dvd burner that burning mpg/ avi/ scvd files to dvdr discs, and watching them in a standard dvd played would be easy. Im holding on to the thread of hope that mabye it is easy and ive just totally missed it..... Anyways, when i am burning avi...etc, to disc, even a standard 700 meg balloons into a 5 to 6 gig file. I dont even remember ever ripping a disc to more than 5 gig so i figured i must be screwing up major. One more quick one here, is it possible to copy mp3s to a dvd disc and have them read in a mp3 player, or at least a dvd player? Anyways...any help on any of this is of course greatly appreciated, peace.

Does it write @1x speed with every program (DVDDecrypter / Nero..)? Are you using media that can be burned at higher than 1x speed?
Create an image file of one of your backups and try to burn it with a different program.

It is probably your burner that only supports reading -r(+r) media at 1x or 2x. Post your model number and firmware version and maybe somebody with the same burner can help.

This is a little unclear to me? Are you converting the avi file to DVD standard mpeg-2 format? Or are you trying to burn the avi to the dvd-r as an avi file? If you are creating a dvd video disc and using the avi file as source and the resulting file is over 4.38GB then you need to change settings to lower bitrate. What program are you using and at what settings?

A standard dvd-r(+r) can hold for the most part 4.38GB, but a commercial DVD can hold 9.4GB for 1 sided double layer disc.

Most likely not. Most if not all dvd players do not support mp3 on dvd-r. Maybe someone here knows of one though. I have been looking out for a car cd player that does that. Probably a year or two away.

i don't know, if you're were doing this for years, shouldn't you know the anwser (just cause you got a burner last month, doesn't mean you couldn't learn how to use it before you got it), anyway, i remember reading something about a dvd backup program (can't remember the name), it was like, the program can make a copy of the original, but there was something about making a copy of a copy

have you tried dvd shrink, it's a good program, a good "free" program

Worth a shot i suppose. (lg model)HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA-4120B. If it supported only 1x/2x then why would dvdxcopy be able to write it in less than 10 miniutes? Nero/ roxio etc take over an hour to copy the backup.

No, i have never had a need to convert to mpeg-2, i presume this is where i am going wrong and converting avi/ svcd to mpeg-2 will make burning them easier.

Ive been using roxio easy media creator 7 plat ( i dont much like it but i dont know of a better program yet). Basic "create new dvd" settings. Lowering the bitrate settings in this program is not an option, the degradation is far too bad.

In my original post i never stated i had contributed anything to this community. There are thousands of forums/ chat rooms out there. I have been encoding for 5 or 6 years now ( which in no way makes me a pro at it), and all i have done is given what advice i have freely to whoever needed it.

Enlighten us a bit more ... quite frankly, your initial posting just doesn't contain a lot of info to work on.

I have no experience with your hardware and also don't use any of the software you mentioned, so all of this is pretty much a guess:

The discrepancy in backup times required for original dvds vs. dvd+-r media might simply be due to your drive. As dvd_maniac already pointed out, check how fast it actually rips original dvds vs. dvd+-r (use e.g. dvddecrypter to find out).

BTW, your drive is rated at 10x for dvd-r, 8x for dvd-rw and 16x for dvd-rom - much of the time difference you observed might be due to this. Which dvd-r media did you try to copy? Throw in crap media and your drive will slow down even more when trying to read those.

As for playing mpegs, mp3 etc. from an iso dvd, check http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers?allvideo=1 and tick the appropriate boxes to find out which players can read such media.

Regarding the filesize of your avi->dvd projects, dvd_maniac again pointed it out: there is no fixed relationship between avi filesizes and the size of your finished dvd - it simply depends on the bitrates you are using.

You might want to try dvd2svcd in avi2dvd mode - I never tried converting an avi, but reports suggest that it is capable of producing a decent-looking dvd with its default settings (provided your avi input is OK quality-wise).
