Just found a chart at divxlabs that supposely claims that their new beta codec a gives higher psnr than xvid at low bitrates? Is this chart accurate?

http://labs.divx.com/archives/TESTFusion.gif Hm why not? This is a graph of bitrate at given PSNR (not the other way around) and it's definitely not for small bitrates, it's for a wide range of quantizers (11, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1).

It indeed shows that their DivX Fusion (at "extreme" and "balanced") uses a couple of percent lower bitrate for the same PSNR.

Does it mean anything? No. XviD once has higher PSNR with a small modification but it was so blurry our eyes watered ;). Ask them for SSIM - and even then, XviD's ssim is lower than realvideo's and vp6's ssim, so it again doesn't mean much.

PS. Is this "Fusion" an mpeg4p2 codec or not?

I'm quite sure that Fusion is still ASP since all their betas are supposed to be played back in *existing* standalones. So the final should too!
