View Full Version : Any downsides of UDF data DVD+/-R ??

I searched the forum on the issue but all I found was a simple statement "use ISO for data DVDs" but it didn't explain why

I'm still wondering if there are any downsides of the UDF format for data DVDs. I usually burn my data DVDs with UDF 1.02 because I think the file format is newer than ISO, so I guess it should be better, right? (I mean it supports files >2GB for example, unlike ISO)

Is it only compatibility issues? And when yes, what computers could I expect not to read my UDF 1.02 data discs? I haven't encountered any problems yet.

Windows older than ME and 2000 can't read UDF without an UDF reader installed. ME, 2000 and XP can read UDF natively.

might just be me (yeah right!), but my dvd players(standalone) doesn't accept UDF, only ISO

That's impossible. DVD video uses UDF.

That can't be. DVD Video uses UDF. Well, it uses UDF 1.02, so they don't necessarily play back a newer version of UDF.

UDF 1.02 can be read by every standalone player.

:D maybe "my standalone doesn't read UDF" is just a nicer description for the fact that it's broken ;)

But seriously, I was only talking about computer data (backups and such) so I don't worry about standalone DVD players (but still a standalone should be able to play UDF 1.02 or it won't read any video DVDs at all :D )

opps! i was referring to data or video, this is what happens, when i try not to be too specific (i'm not embarrass, just look at one of my quotes)
