Greetings!
A small question about XVID:
What is the optimal [Bits/(Pixel*Frame)] ratio for this codec?
I need it to set the correct resolution for my dvd-rips.
Afaik, a good ratio for DX50 is 0.28-0.20. Keepeing this in mind, I often undersized my rips (esp. 1-CD encodings) and eventually I decided to try XVID and found out that with the ratio 0.17 it performed better than DX50 with 0.20 (maybe for one specific movie :))
So what's the minimum for XVID? Let's assume the movie has _average_ compressibility, amount of motion etc.
P.S. I usually use denoising as follows:
Temporalsoften(2,3,3,mode=2,scenechange=6)
mergechroma(blur(1.3))
FluxSmooth(5,7)
or
Temporalsoften(3,5,5,mode=2,scenechange=10)
Convolution3d("moviehq")
FluxSmooth(7,7)

To my mind, it doesn't mean anything.
It may be 0.070 or so and still the quality may be awesome, depending
on what filtering you're making ;)

Check out the clip from my 1Cd encode, the ratio in this film was about 0.080 but still it is ALMOST DVD quality.The bitrate is about 550kbit\s but I recommend to switch OFF all postprocessing to watch this at its best :)

This thread should give you some of the information you want. (For example that it doesn't make any sense at all to talk of an optimal [Bits/(Pixel*Frame)] ratio for any codec, and that you should use a compressibility test instead.)

The encode was made with Koepi's build 1.1 from 06112004 I hope you don't mind me saying, but it looks like the aspect ratio of your encode is incorrect!
Your encode has a pixel frame size of 720x336, which equates to an aspect ratio (AR) of 2.14:1. Surely a pixel frame of 720x304, would have been nearer the mark. And would have increased your encodes Qf - If you're into that sort of thing!

Hmm.. Nowadays I do all encodes in Recode.Does the aspect ratio
play a big role in AVC too? You know,I always watch my videos on PC
so I need a wider picture in 16:9 films :D

Leo Knowing the correct aspect ratio of the source is always very important, especially when generating cropped (and re-sized) encodes with square pixels!
