Is it possible to auto encode mpegs 2 xvid?

I was wondering if someone knows how I can acomplish converting mpeg-2 video files into Xvid without any user input.

I use SageTV to capture all my video into mpeg-2. I would like to be able to convert thenm to Xvid with preset quality settings into the same folder automatically. I imagine this would be done through a command line batch file process?

I do not know any programming but would be greatful if someone has done this already or point me in the right direction..

I was looking for a command line tool as well and I found mencoder to be a good fit.
