increasing the number of threads in mencoder does't yield spectacular results.. fps went up from 77 to around 90 (17%). That's quite disappointing considering x264 performance increases by 59%.

Further improvements have to be done to allow good scaling beyond 8x. ;)


Finally did that. I announced a new version of ELDER in this thread:

Well, considering how common Xvid is with computer enthusiasts and how those will love multicore processors, you really would make yourself a name with a working ELDER!!! :) Just a little motivation, since I just got my new Athlon X2, which really wants something to do right now... ;)
I sure wish I was good enough to help with ELDER's developement!

only 10 ppl have downloaded alpha1 so far and I got very few (2) feedback.

feel free to complain about anything so that I can improve it. that's what the alphas are there for.

To be honest I haven't been able to download it myself so far since I'm away from my main computer with very limited internet acess for a few weeks (and my final and most important exam is only one month away, so I will spend only very few time on the PC till then :( ).

Maybe you should make ELDER more public, namely reporting it to some hardware and software news pages around the internet! I never have heared anything of ELDER outside this forum, which of course is only a very small circle of selected pople!

(Of course for that ELDER would have to be somewhat stable and easy to use, which I can't comment about since I haven't tested it yet...)

With your permission I'd also like to mail some PC news pages about ELDER and test it thoroughly (after my exam)! I'm very sorry that I can't do this any sooner!

I just can't believe how ELDER could possibly not get popular, there's just so much buzz about DualcoreCPUs right now and everyone is desperately searching for multithreaded programs!

Well, on the other hand, I had to learn that most people are stupid and (what's worse) terribly ignorant... :(

Vielleicht wäre sogar eine Vorstellung bei der Zeitschrift PC-GAMES-Hardware angebracht (erreicht zwar vor allem PC-Anfänger, aber das muß ja nich schlecht sein, zumal die grade einen Artikel speziell über Dualcore-CPUs machen).

Bigger advertisement would be great but for the current alpha stage would not be very appropriate since it is very user unfriendly in its current state.
For most windows users there has to be a simple 1click installer.
For alpha the main target is to get it to work reliably. The beta phase then will be for a larger audience (and more userfriendly) to improve rate control and such.

BTW, alpha2 is just a matter of a few lines of code.
