I just OC'ed my XP1700+ to a 2400+! Here's my rambling story. I'm a bit giddy right now because I thought perhaps I had botched the job, but it turned out OK.
My k7s5a lacks any OC features other than a hacked bios that lets me adjust the FSB. I have been OC'ing my FSB from 133 to 147 for a couple of years, so the 1700+ has actually been running at 1617MHZ, somewhere between a 1900+ and 2000+. But the only way to go higher was to mod the chip, which is risky. Since I handed my old CPU down to my brother I didn't have a backup and so I didn't want to risk it. My brother upgraded his CPU for Xmas so he let me have my old 1.0 Tbird (which was modded to a 1.1) back.
The Tbred 1700+ is actually very easy to mod because you don't have to make any connections, just break them. The new tbreds use a soft 'organic' packaging which is easy to cut, unlike the old ceramic ones (which required a dremel). The old ceramics were easy to bridge, but a pain to cut.
First I cut a connection to change my multiplier from 11 to 11.5. This only required 1 cut and it was a good test to make sure I was cutting correctly. That went fine so I only need to make 2 more cuts to get to my final multiplier of 13.5. I made these and tried it out, but he CPU came up as a 1500+ in the bios. After rechecking the cuts I recalled that some boards had problems with multipliers over 12.5, so I thought it would be a good idea to update the BIOS since it was outdated and I thought perhaps the problem was just that the MB didn't recognize the 'new chip'. Luckily my hunch turned out to be right.
So right now I'm running without any errors at 1.979Ghz at the default voltage of 1.6v. I'm sure this chip could do more, but it's so much work to manually mod the multipliers/voltage so I went with a speed that I thought would give a good chance of success at the default voltage. When I bought this chip a long time ago I specifically picked up a model that was known as a good OC'er, so its nice to finally be able to do it.
