View Full Version : Can I safely delete VIDEO_TS.VOB?

The DVDs in question here are Amelie, on which VIDEO_TS.VOB includes the intro disclaimer and logo and the Royal Tenenbaums, on which it is just a 170MB trailer with no sound that isn't referenced anywhere on the DVD - I don't even know why they have it there if no one's going to see it.
Now I tried deleting VIDEO_TS.VOB (keeping the IFO and BUP files intact) on both DVDs and they work great in PowerDVD. Amelie goes straight to the menu with no disclaimer/logo intro and the Royal Tenenbaums plays just the same - but of course 170MB smaller.
My question is: Is this a wise thing to do, or will I run into trouble playing these DVDs on standalone players?

I wouldn't do this. There's a chance you mess up the dvd navigational structure. Numenu has routines that can recognise unreferrenced material and safely remove it. So I would run numenu on your dvd and see what happens.

Didn't think of that, since I never used it ;). Either way do not just delete vob files.

i occasionally use 'menu extras' in IfoEdit to strip referenced vobids in the menus when they are excessively large and unnecessary. although as Influenza has already pointed out, NuMenu4U does a fantastic job of removing unrefernced material and unwanted language streams, with the added bonus of re-encoding your menu to smaller size - which is particularly useful for those pesky motion menus that take up a LOT of space.

I just ran Vobblanker on the Royal Tenenbaums and it replaced the 16K VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP files with 10K versions, removing the unreferenced VIDEO_TS.VOB. So that seems okay.
I used Pgcedit with this guide (http://jean.laroche.free.fr/Jumping0.4.3.1/) to edit the Amelie DVD to skip the disclaimer/logo and go straight onto the main menu. It works great on PowerDVD. However, Vobblanker won't remove VIDEO_TS.VOB like with the Tenenbaums. Any sugggestions?

16K to 10K? That doesn't seem to be a huge space saver ;)

You're forgetting the 179MB VIDEO_TS.VOB file :sly:
Anyhow, I burned the movie with menus at a bitrate of 4800 and it plays perfectly. Still unsure about Amelie, though.

have you checked, what does that VOB really contain? e.g. open it in dvd2avi or in vdmod or try to check in pgcedit, if that material is referenced somewhere.
how big is it anyway?

It's contains just the intro logo/disclaimer that I removed from the startup line in Pgcedit. It's only 19MB but I figured VobBlanker would do away with it automatically once I did that.
It's something I'd like to do with all of my rips.

don't you have the back-up copy that pgcedit did from the IFOs?
use those and give vobblanker another chance...
