what file determines the breaks in chapters?

for example, yesterday i ripped the manchurian candidate...the ENTIRE disc onto my hard drive. then, using nero recode, i chose the option to burn the main movie to the DVD. when i popped in the main movie, everything worked fine...however, what i noticed was that the chapters were still intact. i could skip ahead and back between chapters...how is this possible when all i burnt to the disc was the main movie? i thought it was the IFO files that included the chapter info...

is it possible that nero automatically used the available IFO files in the discs directory?

so if i want to make only main movie backups, but still keep the chapters intact (so i can skip ahead and back) between chapters, i should not only rip the video files but also the IFO files?

also, if i choose that option, will unnecessary IFO files be burnt to the disc?

for example...if, in dvd decryptor, i choose file mode and select only to rip the main movie files as well as the ifos...then open Nero recode and select to burn JUST the main movie, then select import DVD video and i just select the folder that all the main movie files are in...will it add not only the main movie file but also all of the other IFOs in that folder?

The IFOs are burnt with the recoded VOBs. All the chapter info is retained - as is the info on the audio and subtitle streams that you have decided to keep.

In Main movie mode (reauthor mode for DVD Shrink) the program makes its own IFOs. Without IFOs you can't play 'em on a standalone player.

Don't worry about "unnessary IFOs". What Recode or DVD Shrink takes, it needs.

in the IFO's that dvdshrink or recode makes, do those include the info?

let's say that when i rip the DVD..i ONLY extract the main movies. then, from the main movies i decide to burn them to a disc using recode. will the chapter info still be included then?

wezman - this isn't a chat line about the theory of DVDs. I thought you had a problem.

If you want to learn more about DVDs, buy a good technical book.

Or refer here (http://dvd.sourceforge.net/dvdinfo/).

PS You can recreate chapter points just from the VOBs using Ifoedit. Now I trust your problem is solved.

i don't mean for it to be a chat line...nor are my questions really regarding dvd theory...i just need to get my facts straight. i need to know if, when burning just the plain movie to a DVD, the chapters will be determined based on the IFOs, or if recode/DVD shrink is able to detect the breaks between each chapter.

the reason why this is so confusing and frusterating is because i could've sworn i burnt that movie with no IFO files included...and if the IFO files are what determine each chapter break, then how was i able to skip back and forth between each chapter? the DVD faq's and guides are a little unclear on this, which is why i'm coming here for help.

Does it work? That is the question. I have said in 2 forums to you now, that these progs make their own IFOs from the VOBs in reauthor mode, which include chapter points.

I have also advised you to experiment, which you seem unwilling to do.

If you are inquisitive about what's on your DVD, look in the folder in Windows Explorer and there will be IFOs BUPs and VOBs. I assure you of that. But, fgs, go look!

And if you are very very inquisitive about DVD theory, I have also pointed you to a great source of knowledge.

Over and out.
