So how distributable are my Nero AVC encodes? I can't expect all my end-users to have the latest version of Nero installed. Is there a decoder only version, or a lite version of Showtime out there?

Not necessarily. There are plenty of decoders able to handle h.264 but maybe not all feature are supported (for example x.264 in ffdshow doesnt support decoding b-frames).
Just wait some time and there will be opensource decoders/filters able to playback nerodigital video streams.

ok i have to bring some order into this. cant be that everyone starts a new thread asking how to play back avc-in-mp4 files, altough it has been asked often already and the stickies (mp4 faq) also tell the answer

once again: the files outputted by nerodigital are simply 100% mpeg-4 spec compliant mpeg-4 avc streams in the mpeg-4 container .mp4
you can play it with any player that supports
1) the .mp4 container
2) decoding avc streams

if you would have read my faq and used search you would know that this is already possible with the
- nero dshow filters in any dshow player
- moonlight dshow filters in any dshow player
- enviviotv dshow filters in any dshow player
- videolan
- mplayer
