Optimal reencoding XviD for standalone

Hi, Have enjoyed a lot of the great advice in this forum, but I've got one Q who's answer is still eluding me;

I reencode a lot of DivX and XviD to hardcode the subs, using VirtualDub, since my standalone DVD-player with Mpeg-4 support doesn't support sub-files. So I have a basic understanding of how to reencode...
But - often the movies play back a bit "shakily" even with a fairly high bitrate, and other times they play back really smooth and nice with a relatively low bitrate...
My question is: are there certain bitrates that "standard" and thus better compatible for standalone players? Or is it something else (read something about qpel?!?)

I got an avi with a info-file that said it was optimized for standalone players, and sure enough - it played back as smoothly as an original DVD. WHAT did the guy do? - Wish I'd saved the file...

No wisdom as I am myself digging the subject, some hints maybe ... :)

What SAP and/or what chip in your SAP ?

If Ess Vibrato chip above 4000kbp/s is risky
If Mtk DE or GE chip above 6000kbp/s is risky

For the ESS chip, best look at the cvs Xvid1.1, Nic's rev seems to be the last build and use the DXN HT PAL or NTSC (depending on source) profile, it will give you SAP compatibility, 4000kbps limiting and VBV buffering, use search for infos on these subjects if new for you.
/Edited: the last Xvid1.1 CVS is Celtic Druid 2004 12 20/

For the MTK chip, it is less sensitive than the ESS to high bitrate with a few more quality options avalaible, again use the cvsXvid 1.1 with the AS@L5 profile, it will give you the VBV buffering and a 8000kbps limiting; that may still be too high for your MTK SAP. So either you restrict to the DXN HT PAL profile or try the Celtic-Druid mtk profile (still under tuning :D )

Depending on the informations you provide about your SAP, encoding bitrates and specs you may get other hints. :)
