What is the diffierence between divx and xvid?

Hi! I have asked my friends what is the diffierence between divx and xvid but nobody can answer my question....so I´m looking for answer here. :confused: :confused: :confused:

Both are MPEG4 codecs.

DivX - closed source, quality not as good as XviD imho

XviD - open source, imho better configurable / support for custom matrices and more

+: completely legitimate solution, open source, 2 pass VBR out encoding out of the box, very configurable

Well that is pretty simple. They are made by 2 different groups. That is basically all there is to it. Other than that they are both MPEG4 codedcs compatable with other MPEG4 codecs. There are some technical differences. But seeing how rudamentary the question is they might be a bit out of the scope.

For instance Xvid has 3 Motion Vector Global Motion Compensation IIRC compared to Divx's useless 1MV GMC. Xvid also supports multiple B frames to Divx's 1 B frame. Xvid also supports packed or non packed bitstream where Divx only currently supports packed bitstream. Packed bitstream being a DXN created AVI hack to make editing easier. Other than that Xivd is just a little bit faster and a little bit sharper picture in general than Divx. There are a few other things and even an item or two that Divx has that Xvid doesn't. But nothing spectacular.

actually, it's warp-points for GMC, but that doesn't matter.

i haven't used divx since xvid was at the dev-api4 stage. haven't looked back - xvid is just consistently 1 or 2 steps ahead of DivxNetworks.

When Divx 5.0 came out I still thought I better stay with Divx. I wasn't sure if Xvid was going to make it and at that point it wasn't much better in quality than Divx.
However Xvid has clearly made the race - its quality has become so much better than Divx and so many people support Xvid by now that noone has to fear it's going to be abandoned.
Divx is now just a costly, lower-quality "alternative"

I'm amazed that no one has recommend Doom9's Codec Comparisons (http://www.doom9.org/codec-comparisons.htm).

Over the years, Doom9 has analyzed many MPEG-4 codecs, including various releases of DivX and XviD.
