Fixing a broken mpeg

I loaded a tv capture mpg that I encoded myself into TMA, but it wouldn't take it, though I'm not sure why since I encoded it the same way I did my other episodes, and it plays back perfectly fine (tested with windows media player and powerdvd). I also tried to demux in TMPEGenc but again it wouldn't take it, and tried a program called mpeg header corrector but again no luck. Neither did PVA instrumento demuxer. Strangely enough, TMPEGenc does not complain if I use that mpeg as a source for reencoding, so that's what I'm doing now. But if there's a better way I'd rather not reencode.

they tell me that it's an illegal file. I tried bitrate viewer as you suggested and it said illegal stream and didn't give me any info. AVIcodec correctly shows the following info:
Video : 414 MB, 1251 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 352*240 (4:3), = MPEG Video, Supported
Audio : 52 MB, 160 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x50 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 1, Supported

In case anyone's wondering, this mpeg was made by tmpegenc with a picvideo source captured by virtualvcr (same way I always do. the lossless avi no longer exists).
