Is it possible for one to make a decent copy of a DVD without having to be a genius about video? i just want to take one copy it to another...much like i could do with my audio cds when i first got a dvd burner. i don't want to know everything there is about DVDs and all kinds of that fancy stuff. i just got a dvd burner and i would like to do this, but everything here is just way too overwhelming. i was able to easily burn a copy of napolean dynamite with DVD decryptor and nero, but now with these other dvds larger than the standard dvd+R, it's just getting way out of hand. i don't know where to go.
i just want a decent dvd copy

Try DVD Shrink

I would also recomend dvd shrink (personal prefrence)
and I was also overwelemed with all the advanced stuff out there.
so if you care about time and quality the only 3 programs you need are the latest relaces of dvd shrink, dvd dycriptor, and nero6
that's all I have used and I have backed up over 400 movies.
and remember people can tell you what they think works best but it is all just opinions, you have to decide what works best for you.
well good luck, and don't get discuraged.

if i just use dvd shrink to backup the movies, all automated compression etc... how much does the main movie have to be compressed to start to look...uh..."shitty".
because i don't really mind as long as the movie is better than VHS...it doesn't have to be pristine.
from here i was just thinking of ripping only the main movie of dvds...it just seems so much easier.
also...is there really a need for dvd shrink when i have nero recode?
i don't even really care about the special features...but the menus are nice and so is the "GUI" for chapter selection.

The compression ratio is not the point -- it is the bitrate devoted to the video that matters.
See this post (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=215729#post215729) and here (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=216428#post216428).
Recode and Shrink are essentially the same thing - AFAIK, they were written by the same person!
Doing a reauthor of the main movie only will give you maximum quality. You can also set start and end points and get rid of the credits, and opening logos etc. if you like.
To reinsert menus after a DVD Shrink/Nero recode reauthor, see here. (http://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?link=711)

sounds like much more hassle than it's worth...i think i'll just rip my dvd's with "main movie" only...if i use that method will i still be able to skip ahead from chapter to chapter (as in, hitting "next" on the remote control?)

Re chapters - yes.
To get best quality, ensure Deep analysis and AEC are checked. Takes a bit longer to do a DVD but the quality is much improved.
