DVD recording

I hope this is the right forum. I finally bit the bullet and bought a LG dual format recorder. So far I have tried recording in dvd+R and DVD+RW neither will play on a no name dvd player. I am about to try the -format. I finalised the disks prior to playing. The recorder performs faultlessly. I would appreciate any advice on procedure. I do not have any control over recording speed only length(Quality) of recording. It is a recorder not a computer based burner and will accept both + and - formats. I will try all options I can think of.

Thanks for reply. I tried the - fomat and although a bit better it seems that it is my cheap player. There a lot out there so I will choose one that will play. The recorder plays everything so its not a big issue. I have re arranged the equipment and will wait till I can check out where the technowlogy is heading.
