View Full Version : Why are DL discs still so expensive?

I just don't get it, is the process to make them that much more expensive than making a DVD-5?

I'm sort of sick of archiving my collection to dvd5's, i've been waiting for the DL discs to come down to the 1-2 dollar level but it hasn't happened yet.

The cheapest I can find is 6 bucks a piece, and they put them in cases. I don't even see any spindles of DL discs yet.

Is the industry just dragging its feet, or are the MPAA people forcing them to keep the prices up to slow down the pirates.

there was a discussion a couple months back, it's was something like how about only 7% of all DL discs created where usable (hense the price gores)

a spindle of 25 at $6 is $150 (probably cheaper than that)

Yield's more like 50%, but that's been getting better. It's mostly because of low volume and low competition.

The pirates that the MPAA needs to worry about press their copies as DVD silvers anyways... Anyone using DVD burners, or even a DVD replicating device (i.e. several burners with one source reader) to proliferate and profit from copies is a small-time racket.

The initial production way was to pretty much glue the two layers together.. this is complex and prone to produce a lot of non working discs. In 2005, the production technique should change, thus bringing better yields and lower production cost. But since disc makers make almost no money with single layer discs, they must get their money someplace, so the cutting edge discs will always cost a lot more than the mainstream product. And of course, of nobody buys, they don't get their development cost back, and as long as they don't see a return in their investment, they are not likely to lower prices. It's the same vicious circle you can see in so many other areas.
