"How long does it take to burn a full 4,489 MB disc?
1x speed: 59 min
2x speed: 30 min
2,4x on 4,7 GB media: 25 min
2,4x on 8,5 GB media: 45 min
4x speed: 15 min
8x speed: 8-9 min, depending on writer
12x speed: 6-7min, depending on writer"

the above from forum.

i have HP poavilion notebook,
celeron 1.8 Ghz,
512 mb ram,
40 gb HD,
notebook with
toshiba sdr 2312 dvd rom, using for reading dvd,
and external type NEC 3500 ag (usb) for burning dvd,
with 2.f9 firmware connected temporarily
with an usb 1.0 connection.

going to usb 2.0 pcmcia card for nec 3500 next week.

nero 6 (most current)
and dvd shrink (ver 3.17 or 3.2)
average 2 1/2 hours - 150 minutes-
per backup to either 4 or 8x blank - or + dvd.

quality of copies so far is excellent.

in device manager for IDE controllers, advanced, transfer mode for 'primary' controller, device '0' have 'dma' set current transfer mode to 'ultra 5 dma mode'
and device '1' reads: auto detection , dma if available, curent transfer mode: not available.

while secondary controller device setting reads:
for '0': 'multi word DMA mode 2'
and for '1' auto detection, DMA if available, current transfer mode: not available.

please advise what i can do to speed up backup/ burning/ copying.

thanks in advance,
robert

put the dvd burner on the primary ide channel, and swap your ide cable for another one.

I had a similar problem, it would take forever to burn, it turned out to be a bum ide cable. It would give errors also though.

thanks for the idea of swapping, how do i do what you suggest? specifically? i am a newby and have no experience with swapping ide channels. guess i can purchase a new ide cable??

to all:
i apologise for posting more than i am allowed, in several forums.
the problem is frustrating.

The primary ide channel is the long rectangular pin that connects to your hard drive more than likely.(the secondary is right beside it, and usually used for cd drives).Usually the primary channel(it should say 1 or A on your motherboard) goes into the hard drive. So if you have only one hard drive, itīs easy enough, just connect the dvd drive(after taking it off the other cable) to the middle connector of the flat cable (the end of which is connected to your hard drive). Make sure the jumpers on the dvd drive are set to slave (you should have a map on your drive). If you have 2 hard drives, disconnect the middle one(usually the slave) and swap it with your dvd drive :)

If you open your pc, itīll make sense.

thanks for the detail. seems a bit too complicated for me right now, as i have a notebook, with external nec 3500ag, and to get to hard drive means opening case, which i am wary to do.

will advise after i upgrade to usb 2.0 this next week. usb 2.0 may solve problem.

Ah well that explains a lot, I hadnt realized you were on a notebook (i never pay attention, but neither did justin ;)), and on usb 1. Yes, usb 2 should solve your issues, usb 1 is slow as hell :)
