Is it possible? I figured out that the Hauppage PVR 250 doesnt support AVI. Previous Thread Title (Virtual Dub and PVR 250)


So I was wondering what a good card is that supports 640x480 Capture uncommpressed video with Virtual dub. Any help Would be greatly Appreciated. I'm looking for the quality that some of the Anime Subbers use.

I'd say that the output of 12Mbps MPEG-2 file is equal to a HuffYUV capture. The tuner in PVR-250 is very good and you can also do filtering on the fly.

Or is there some other reason not to use the PVR-250?

Well, I would think your Hauppage PVR 250 should be more then enough at 9-15mb/ps but then again I have never capped with a Hauppage MPEG card.

What kinda source are you trying to cap from? I think most subbers get their caps from people in japan who cap from pretty Digital sources.

If your capping from VHS, LD, VHS etc. any capture card with VfW drivers should work (in theory atleast) such as the Viewcast Ospreys and some Hauppage cards I think.

Personally I cap my anime LDs now with the Canopus MTV2200SX Light (aka MPEGPro MVR in the US and Digital Video Recorder now in Japan I think) using the japanese MTVX drivers. That allows me to cap in MPEG2 using the properity Mediacruise and in uncompressed NTSC_J (no PAL) using WDM applications such as VirtualVCR and iuVCR. It also seems to work in Vdub at full resulutions but you cant use its onboard audio capture with Vdub. This is a pretty expensive solution though.

Hello,

Most of the old cheap TV Tuner cards that come with the Conexant BT878 chip can do this without any problems, I do it all the time using the BT878 modified drivers, you can find it here:

I have owned the Lifeview FlyVideo 98 and the AverTV TV Tuner card and both capture uncompressed video at 640 X 480. Now, I must warn you that FlyVideo 98 comes with Composite video In and doesn't have an S-Video In jack, but the AverTV does.

640x480x29.97 uncompressed in YUY2 (16 bits per pixel) is 17.6 MB/sec, which is 61.7 GB/hour. In RGB (24 bpp), that would be 26.3 MB/s, 92.6 GB/hr.

HuffYUV compression should reduce that by approximately 2.5:1.

Its not equal to 12Mb/s -- MPEG-2 is a lossy compression. HuffYUV is lossless.

17.6 MB/s divided by 2.5 is 7.5MB/s, which is 56.3 Mb/s.

Sorry for all my questions but I'm really just looking for the right card or DV device to buy. I want to mimic the quality and size of what some of the anime subbers capture. I want to then be able to edit what was captured with virtual dub to either Xvid or 3ivx Codec. I have bought many different cards with many that do not support a capture resolution of 640x480. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My intentions are to record shows from my digital cable box.

I merged you question into this thread, since it seems to be related.

What kind of output does your digital box offer? I've have digital cable boxes that only produced analog video and analog audio. But I do have one digital cable box with several digital outs: firewire for transport streams, HDMI, and SPDIF.

If analog, then you have the same issue. If digital output, then you may want to visit the HDTV/TiVo/DVB forum.

Most of the newer TV cards with CX2388x or SAA713x chips can do 640x480 too. But you may run into problems getting them to work with the current vdub version.

However, directshow capturing capabilities are being developed at a furious pace as we speak, and the experimental vdub 1.6.3 release already looks very good so the number of devices supported by vdub is going to increase dramaticaly shortly. :)

Capturing using Vdub and a SAA7134 Card like the Cinergy400 works with no problems via the wdm/vfw-wrapper and a little registry mod.
I used Vdub for capturing full PAL till some time ago, but you can easely capture using VirtualVCR and the Cards delivered WDM Driver where no patch in the registry or wrapper is needed as VirtualVCR comes as DShow appl.
But as said Dshow support in Vdub's capture Mode is in developing stage :)

beside mpeg2 is lossy, you are aware about the 4:2:0 colorspace where your captures do result in half vertical chroma frequency, at least 4:2:2 provides full chroma vertical frequency and thats imho importand when capturing - especially interlaced signals.

(BTW: It would be interesting if the Mainconcept Encoder mpeg2 engine really is capable capturing using mpeg2 4:2:2 Profile as the latest DGDecode i capable to recognise/decode that properly?

Ok, Thank you all for your Help and contributions to my helpless self. I have one further question. My VIdeomate TV Ultra finally arrived in the mail today and im having a problem.

I have the videomate TV Ultra with Virtual dub open and i'm trying to capture Video from the S-video or composite input I have it set on YUY2 640X480 capturing with HuffYUV and it will not capture any frames. But when I reduce the size to 320X240 it work fine, But i want to capture at 640X480, DO you know what I am doing wrong?

Some people say i ahve to make some registry changes or some editing to drivers? How would i go about getting this to work?

Sorry for being such a mindless noob. :(

You are doing nothing wrong. It is simply that the drivers for the capture card have only one capture mode that is compatible with VirtualDub.

I have the same problem with my Winfast cards.

Of course, I could be mistaken (often am).

Has to do with them VfW wrappers I bet. Your device likely has WDM drivers like most devices made today and Vdub (at the moment atleast) is a VFW capture device. You are probrobly going to be stuck using a WDM based proggie instead like VirtualVCR (http://virtualvcr.sourceforge.net/) or iuVCR (http://www.iulabs.com/iuvcr/download.shtml)

until Vdub becomes a WDM capture atleast (provided it ever does). At the moment the experimental builds are but they are pretty much unusable for me. VirtualDub proggrammers have just recently started experimenting with WDM capture.
