liteon sohw 1213s (12x read), P4 2Ghz, 1GBram, 120gb storage

when i make a personal backup of my dvd's with dvd decrypter, it says its reading at 1.5x max - takes almost an hour to rip a dvd

the process also seriously slows down my system which should not really happen with this much power. testing the drive (data transfer) with nero cd speed also slows down my system to the same extent. the speed test doesnt go over 2x read speed

nero info tool says that my dvd drive is on the 2ndary IDE channel and DMA is off - could this be the problem?

what could be reasons for slowing down a drive and a system so much?

many thx

DMA off is not good and definitely the problem - PIO mode uses large amounts of the system even if you have a 3GHz CPU. Also the transfer is slow with PIO, much to slow for DVD (it's from the time when 2x CDRoms where the newest invention, LOL)

Check the BIOS, some BIOSes have a setting that disables DMA for optical drives (and sometimes it's on by default  )
